Not sure how to feel

We have just brought our first house. It’s lovely and I fell so in love with it. We got the keys 2 weeks ago and a few days after I had a baby.

My husband has been moving our stuff over and we have been staying at my mums with my 18 month and newborn whilst he’s been going over to decorate and get the house ready, he sleeps at my mums and works in the day. He went to the house today and someone’s broken in and gone through all our stuff and stolen items.

I feel really deflated, hurt, sad and scared. I feel scared to move in as I feel what if I was there with my babies, I don’t feel safe now in my dream house I haven’t even moved into yet.

Am I being silly and I should get over this, it happens or is this a bad sign already?

Horrible thing to happen and I totally get your maternal instinct to protect your babies but I doubt the scumbags who broke in would have if people were living there. Empty houses are watched as easy targets, like cars more likely to be broken into when no one's inside or around
Get help cleaning, change the locks and consider an alarm or cctv doorbell or similar if you can. The local police should have a crime prevention officer who will advise of other things. Don't let the scum who did this spoil thingsFlowers

I’m afraid it was the fact that the house was obviously uninhabited but contained items of worth that attracted the criminals.
Years ago friends did similar and husband actually slept on a camp bed in the empty house while decorating as he was convinced the boiler and pipe work would be stripped out.
You’ll be fine when the house is finished. Invest in some good motion activated outdoor lights and licks for your peace of mind.

Oh how awful.

You have been very unlucky.
Were you insured yet?

juas · 22/03/2022 21:43

@pepsirolla @Xpologog thank you for your kind words. I have brought a ring doorbell, camera and alarm system but just hadn’t got around to fitting it yet as we are waiting for Wi-Fi and the baby is just a 12 days old, so everything has been manic right now.

You are right, I shouldn’t let these scumbags ruin my new house for me. I am glad you both feel they wouldn’t of broken in if they felt the house had people living in it, that makes me feel a bit more reassured. Thank you.

@billy1966 luckily yes, was hoping I would never have to use it.

Thank goodness for that.
They were opportunistic.

Keep focusing on this happy time.
New baby, new house.
A new beginning.

If baby and you are well, you are blessed.
Don't allow some wasters to spoil this special time for you.

Wishing you the best in your new home with your family.Flowers

Yes—crime of opportunity. This is silly, but I would burn some sage or something while I curse the buggers.
