To take this role at work?

This is going to be outing so name changed. Smile

I work at a job centre and hate it. I am a “top performer” in what staff are measured against, so I am good at the role and can handle the very high pressure environment; but it’s not what I want to do forever.

Beyond that, my manager cannot stand me. We’re cordial but he has his favourites and no matter how well I do he rarely gives me recognition. It stemmed from last year when I needed an emergency day off due to my daughter being unwell and he was awful, the union got involved and now he holds a grudge.

There is an opportunity for me to join another team that is underperforming. Pros: it would be easier work & I would get a new manager so fresh start. Cons are “stepping on the new team’s toes” as I would be the deputy team leader. This would possibly annoy the current deputy (who management have blamed the poor performance on) and maybe other team members they’re friendly with. The performance is not easy to rectify so I could be leading a sinking ship so to speak, I definitely need the rest of the team on my side.

Aibu to take on the new role? It’s a side step move that may or may not pay off.

I don't see why not TBH...If its an opportunity to grow id go for it. I personally wouldn't really care about stepping on toes; If you're under-performing and needs to be replaced you cant be mad at your replacement!

Take it and run

The job is there for someone, and having got to the point of seriously considering, like you are, I'd take it. . No job is perfect, but it'll be a fresh start. You can be friends a colleague but on the quiet you know others could do it better. Most places like a new face and want to make them feel well. If there are one or two that are a bit off, I'm sure they'll come around as they get to know and like you - they might even end up being a friend!

Absolutely take the role.

When you saY performance would be hard to improve- if you don't improve performance will you end up being the fall guy? Or is it a win-win: if you improve it everyone will be delighted, if not it will be felt it was an impossible task.

Thank you all, I am leaning towards going ahead nowSmile

I think there would be disappointment if I didn’t improve figures but I wouldn’t be the fall guy @LadyGardenersQuestionTime. I think I can raise figures easily myself, but to make a proper improvement I’d need to lead the rest of the team to improve their figures too as I can only do so much.

Overall though it’s looking to be more favourable than staying stagnant with my current role

If it isn't the team leaders fault they are poorly performing you can at least approach it as a team effort to "play the numbers game".
