DS food intake

My DS7 (nearly 8) is very slim. You can sort of see shoulder blades, ribs, spine etc). He is picky eater. My ex (DS') dad is arguing that he must be taken to the GP immediately. I know for a fact that DS' actual weight is ok because he was weighed recently at a hospital appointment for something else and they said it was fine.

Could anyone shed any light on how much their 7/8 year olds eat in any one day?

I don't know if I'm being unreasonable by saying to my ex that I don't think he needs to go to the GP, but it would be helpful to see what other people think / how much their children eat.

If his Dad wants the child to see a GP, then he should absolutely take him. Why object? It seems reasonable for Dad to ask the GP if he has a concern.

It's not on you to take him if you aren't worried.

@Krakenchorus He's insisting that I take him.

DD is 7, 132cm and about 27 kg, so roughly 91st and 75th centiles. Slim but not skinny.

She's hungry in the morning so big bowl of cereal, sometimes a piece of toast too.
Lunch is small sandwich, an apple or piece of cucumber, small yoghurt, bag of crisps/other savoury snack, 1 biscuit.
Dinner is usual spag bol/chilli/meat & 2 veg type fare. She doesn't eat much meat but will have veg/carbs. Usually has a side plate sized portion. Dessert is a yoghurt or chocolate mousse.
She would eat snacks all day if allowed, but usually has a bagel or piece of toast after school.

DD1 is nearly 8 and very skinny. There's no fat on her at all (she gets very cold very quickly as a result), but she's quite muscly and very active (you can see a six pack in the morning before she's had breakfast). Like your DS you can see her ribs/spine/shoulder blades very clearly, but the most noticeably skinny parts are her arms and legs. They are like very thin twiglets! She's not much into snacks, but eats really well at meals, so I just make sure she's getting plenty of calories in each meal.
A typical school day would be:
Bowl of cornflakes, a bagel with cashew butter, a kiwi, and half an apple for breakfast.
Cheese, avocado and pickle sandwich, crisps, a carrot, a chunk of cucumber, satsuma, and a jam tart for lunch.
A few crackers after school.
2 x fajitas with peppers, kidney beans, fried tofu, sour cream, salsa, and cheese for dinner followed by a yoghurt.

She is naturally skinny, but I know when that drops to 'worryingly skinny' IYKWIM - I'm sure you're the same OP. If you are confident all is OK, I'd suggest exH takes him to the GP.

Sorry- What a tool he sounds. Ignore him, then. Hand him the GP's contact details and tell him to crack on if he is concerned.

Tell him to take him. If he doesn't believe what you're telling him the hospital said he won't believe what you tell him the GP says either. "If you want DS to see a GP then take him." Every time. Rinse, lather, repeat. There's zero point in ask what other kids eat.
@PinkyU No his dad has never attended any medical appointment.
DS weight was 24kg and height 128cm which I believe is ok.
Yes have told his dad the measurements but he's not accepting it because DS is very slim and doesn't eat much.
At that height and weight he's not remotely underweight! Perfectly healthy weight for his height :)

My 6.5 year old is 122cm and 19.5kg, she's just on the edge of underweight and healthy weight. She's very slim and willowly, but I don't think she looks unhealthly thin.

Breakfast nutrigrain bar
Lunch school
After school fruit or chocolate
Dinner cooked or sandwich depending on day
Pudding ice cream or youghurt or fruit

Try and talk him out of anything else as he had already eaten loads as it is

I will add he dosent like vegetables won't even try them. Even hidden ones. And yes before anyone says anything I have tried and tried but he has a crying fit and won't eat anything no matter how much I try. Last one lasted for an hour.

Nothing wrong with seeing some rib or shoulder blades.
I hear lots of people nowadays commenting that seeing any sort of bone is wrong and absolutely means underweight. Hmm

Your child sounds fine. Your ex can start making medical appointments if he wishes but all sounds good on your end. Carry on as you are. Smile
