To be pissed off at neighbours loft extension work?!

Neighbours behind us have just started a loft extension meaning weeks of noise and builders on scaffolding overlooking our garden! Gardens are only 30ft long so it’s very in our face.

I was looking forward to enjoying sitting in the garden now the weathers better. WFH at back of house (nowhere else) and can hear banging, shouting, drilling and sawing constantly.

AIBU to think they could have at least knocked and let us know in advance?

Especially considering we called the fire brigade to stop their house burning down (saw smoke coming out) when they were out last summer!

They cut down a row of mature trees when they moved again with no warning, just went in the kitchen and saw they’d taken up back fence and were cutting them down, which gave excellent screening for us and them so now even more invasion of privacyAngry.

It's not an "invasion of privacy" at all. You don't have an innate right not to have your garden overlooked. The neighbours haven't done anything wrong in this instance, what exactly would have you expected to be done differently if they'd warned you? Changed the weather?

As long as they stick to building work regs according to your local council .. so not before 0800 and not on Sundays .. they should be fine, if annoying. Loud music from builders you can comment on.

I would be sad about the loss of any trees because of the loss of habitat but depends on the trees and whether they were dying like many of our trees from invasive virus mostly brought in from garden centres.

I would let my neighbours know if I had major works ahead. And possibly neighbours directly opposite.

Sounds to me like you have rich person's taste and poor person's budget.
If you want not to be overlooked and not inconvenienced by the noise of neighbours, then you need to move to a secluded spot and buy a detached house!

Yabu on all fronts.

They may well have told their neighbours. You're not really a neighbour under the strictest definition.

Likewise their trees, their neighbours hoixe. Noone has to maintain your privacy. If you want it then do something about it!

Duchess379 · 22/03/2022 20:18

But it would still be noisy if they told you first, so what's the difference?!

DuckyNoMates · 22/03/2022 20:19

They should have warned you

They are at the opposite end of 60ft of garden. Cool your jets!

We’ve had next door pneumatic drilling the concrete drive up since Saturday with no cursory knocks. And a 7 month old to contend with. My head is absolutely battered. I wouldn’t have minded so much if they had warned me.
