To get my hair done at the college?

Has anyone else done this? Or have any stories? Will it be okay?

I’ve not had my haircut since 2019, and it’s just an expense I can’t afford right now at my usual old salon but the college only charge 15.00!

My friend said that college do’s are notorious for wonky cuts :(

They are usually very good as all the students are supervised but be prepared for it to take a very very long time! Years ago one of my sons had a short back and sides that took 1.5 hours!

I always get mine done as a model cut in a local salon. So a similar principle and no complaints.

I once had my eyebrows waxed at the local college, I looked permanently surprised for a good 2 months...

Yes, I’ve done this, it was fab. I get a conditioning treatment, cut and blow dry for £22. All good products and the student does a much better job with the conditioner treatment than the hair salons, as she applies it to small sections of hair and takes her time.

The supervisor does a proper check afterwards with a comb to make sure it’s all cut properly.

I also tip the student £5.

This is at our local college.

I teach in FE/HE and we have a salon on campus. Only the advanced students are let loose on real people and they are very closely supervised. The teaching staff are all ex hairdressers - a lot are women who have come from excellent salons and switched into teaching because it fits better with having dc.

You do need to be prepared to go at funny times (it doesn’t tend to work brilliantly if you have a 9-5 Monday to Friday job) and to be there for a while though.

I’ve been loads plus the beauty treatments.

Electrical facials for a fraction of the price, and i had a few milia removed for free.

I've had some great cuts at the college. It was better once I worked out the schedule though so I could book in on the nights the L3 or 4s were in. They were mostly already working as stylists and doing the advanced course to move up to senior stylist/management so they could do more complex styles. The L2s had a set range of skills they had to learn and were less able to adapt things to your particular hair type. Still worth it for a tenner though!

When I was younger I'd get mine done at colleges. Didn't have any bad cuts, but they were always slow, and after one which took hours I decided to just spend more money.

ThinWomansBrain · 21/03/2022 23:13

not hair, but once worked in an FE college and used the beauty salon - manicures, pedicures all were supervised, it was fine. As PP has commented, can take a bit longer than you'd expect.
All went went well until I was in a cubicle (all separated by curtains rather than individual rooms) - person next door spent an hour moaning about "that awful woman" - me Grin.
We left at different times, but i did ask if she'd enjoyed her massage the nexy time I saw her.

Had mine done at the local college, they used really nice products, lovely atmosphere, does take longer but saved a fortune and very happy with the results

TonksInPurple · 21/03/2022 23:17

Used to go to the college all the time never had a bad hair cut but it can take a while.

MarmiteCoriander · 21/03/2022 23:27

OP- I assume you mean a hairdressing training college? Yes, I have one local to me. Price is excellent and the students are watched and checked. Downside is its generally limited days and times and can take much longer than a regular salon.

I have bra length hair, so never had a short, cropped look, nor had them colour it. Actually went this week for a wash, trim and blow dry, L2 for £10!!! This is between zone 1/2 London, so incredible value. I've never, ever had a wonky cut or any issues.

I did once return to a regular, full price salon, when I realised one side was cut 1 inch shorter than the other though- but never any issues at the training salon.

moonbedazzled · 21/03/2022 23:42

I had mine done at my college once. Every time she snipped a bit of hair, she called her supervisor over to check it. I thought I was never going to get out!
Don't choose a radical look. Don't go short where a good cut is vital. Start off with a trim until you've assured yourself of their standard of ability.
Our college was always fully booked - usually by the staff and they dud a great job.
