Asking what age do you consider to be old?

I was thinking about this and I don't consider 60s that old at all. Even 70s nowadays aren't that old imo. I think a lot of it is down to lifestyle but in general speaking, what age would you consider to be old?

Whatever age my eldest brother is! He’s 10 years older than me (he is eldest of 4). So he went to university when I was still at primary school. Got married when I was at secondary school. Had his first child when I was at university. His children left school around the time mine were born. Now he’s about to retire and I’m about to start a new job. It’s enough of an age gap that he’s always doing something more grown up than me.

Agree a lot is to do with health but that is much more than state of mind or attitude etc. Once you get to 50s you've got a bigger chance than previously of coming a cropper to all sorts of nasties eg cancer. If you're lucky enough to get through to mid 60s with a few niggling conditions you're on the home straight and you seem relatively younger than the ones 10 years younger who got unlucky.

babywalker56 · 21/03/2022 20:05

Some of these comments😂

For me it's definitely 70+. As a pp said, there's nothing wrong with being old. You can still be fit, healthy and have a great life but that doesn't mean you're not starting to get old

Jacketpotato84 · 21/03/2022 20:08

I’m 34 I feel real old like I’ve been here ages but then life has also flashed by in a second at the same time?
What’s that about

Ragwort · 21/03/2022 20:08

Paris are you aware that 65 is no longer retirement and pension age?

inheritancetrack · 21/03/2022 20:11

My 70 yo mum ice skates with me and she's pretty nifty across the ice. No one believes her when she tells them her age. It is just a number and health is everything.

evilharpy · 21/03/2022 20:11

I don't know what age is old. My mum was old at 40. My dad's friend died in his 90s and I don't think I'd have considered him old until the very last few years, he was just tireless and his attitude to life never aged at all. A work colleague was considering retiring at 55 but is now 60 and says he's just nowhere near ready, and absolutely nothing about him is old. My mother in law is 70 and not old and my auntie is 77 and not old, but my father in law is 68 and old. One of my best friends is 43 and will definitely be old by the time she's 60. My next door neighbour is 86 and I've started to think recently he's getting on a bit - his social life has slowed down slightly and he's been on fewer holidays! But he also stubbornly refuses to be an old person and is pretty awesome.

I really think it's more about attitude than anything else although mobility is also a major factor.

MrsGHarrison87 · 21/03/2022 20:13

Depends on the person. My grandma was an old lady at 60, she wanted that. But I know people in their 70s who are still active and doing stuff and I don't consider them that old.

RosesAndHellebores · 21/03/2022 20:22

Well I plan on working full-time until 65 at least in a Director level role. 10/11 hour days. If I get to 80, I'm having lots of sherry and 10 fans a day Grin.

My mother plays bridge, goes to coffee mornings, has a two mile walk every every day and is very well turned out. She's 85.

oakleaffy · 21/03/2022 20:23

Mum (Stepmum) is 82 and walks further and faster than me!
She walks on average 6-7 kilometres a day according to data on her phone.
She’s a slim person with good posture.

astorsback · 21/03/2022 20:24

I’d say 70.

I know a few ‘fit, young at heart’ 70 plus year olds and some frail, ill ones but generally, 70 and over is the ‘old’ classification in my mind.

Young is under 30.

oakleaffy · 21/03/2022 20:24

Edit: Oh also nicely groomed and stylish !

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 21/03/2022 20:28

I think it’s mainly state of mind. I had a relatives that were “old” for years when I was a child.

Both my parents are now older than them and don’t behave/act “old” in the same way. Nothing like it.

I had another relative who sadly died in his 60s that I swear never aged over 21.

muddyford · 21/03/2022 20:29
  1. Though I have a friend of 96 who isn't old!
MurmuratingStarling · 21/03/2022 20:30

65 is classed as elderly which always makes me PMSL. As if 65 is elderly!!! I mean, I know it's only a 'term' but it just sounds a bit rude IMO. A bit like the word 'spinster' for an unmarried woman. Or 'baby born out of wedlock' for a baby born to an unmarried woman. Such outdated and naff terms.

Elderly should be reassigned to 80.

MissDynamite23 · 21/03/2022 20:30

My granny will be 89 this year and yet she doesn’t seem old. She has a sense of humour and joie de vivre that is ageless. Sometimes I do a double-take as there are moments when her age becomes apparent and I always am taken by surprise. She’s in very good health.

In general terms I’d say 75 is the start of old age. My MIL is about to turn 75 and suddenly does seem old having always been fairly youthful.

ChessMaster3000 · 21/03/2022 20:30

When I was 20 I thought 50 was old, when I was 30 I thought 60 was old and now I'm in 40s I think 75ish is old.

MurmuratingStarling · 21/03/2022 20:31

@Spanielsarepainless

80. Though I have a friend of 96 who isn't old!
96?! She is a BIT old! Grin #joking

You're only as old as the man you feel! Grin

ladygindiva · 21/03/2022 20:33

My dm is 77 and still chases my kids round the park. Mind she was still doing aerobics and dance classes when she was 70.

adriftabroad · 21/03/2022 20:36

I think 70/75.

I think men, especially, go a bit downhill then.
I thnk 60 onwards women can often start to look older but then change less and outdo the men in later life!

IwaswhoIam · 21/03/2022 20:42

I agree with you ! 60’s is definitely not old . 70’s is getting there. Generally by 80 I think that’s old although it depends on the person and their lifestyle . I’m 37 years young myself and the older I get the younger the older years seem. Maybe by the time I’m 60, 80 won’t seem old at all 😆

nildesparandum · 21/03/2022 20:43

As previous posers have already said, anyone twenty years older than me.I am in my late 70s and still do not think myself as old.
My lifestyle is certainly not that of an ''old'' lady.I I say anymore I will be outing myself.

Pumpernickelsoup · 21/03/2022 20:45

Usually 80’s+. Sometimes can appear older in abilities and mind in 70’s depending on health. Some lucky people still fairly young in spirit into their 90’s but I would still class as physically old once into 80’s.

I’m 34.

OverByYer · 21/03/2022 20:46

I would say 75 +. My parents who have always been good for their age, seem to have really declined as they reached 75.
