Posting for traffic, but I desperately need advice.

Decided to take the initiative and start cutting in DDs bedroom (against DHs advice) but I've got a whole day off to myself tomorrow and wanted to get cracking....despite being 39 I have never decorated before and as it turns out, I'm no Bob Ross 🙄

It looks so shit I actually cried. I've managed despite being really really careful to get bright turquoise on brilliant white. We have plastic electrical trunking which doubles as coving (it does look good I swear!) so I can't sand it and repaint.

My only option is to now tape over the turquoise and repaint the coving/trunking but after reading some blogs the majority say tape is crap as it just peels off the paint when you remove it and just do it free hand.

Well, yeah I've tried thar and look where it got me! DH won't be angry, but he will be so disappointed because it looks so awful.

Are there any seasoned decorators on here that can help a very upset, desperate and hormonal 39 year old?!

@lennybruceisnotafraid

No its trunking up the top, it's a curved "D" shaped so gives the appearance of a coving type thing!

Do all of the above suggestions to remove it...but could also then consider sticking a fun border or stickers around the top

Personally I'd tape over the turquoise in a straight line - take time in getting it right, then do the white. Then I'd leave it to dry for a few days and put the tape on the white and paint the turquoise. Do take time to the tape straight though.

Are you using a proper cutting in brush op?

Whatamesssss · 21/03/2022 21:42

You need a good quality brush, Harris 25mm would be the one I would use.

The best way to get a good line on a bit that is wonky is to be confident and just go for it. Don't follow the wonky bits, just do a straight line, even if it is going slightly over the trunking. Don't do hesitant little bits, do long broad strokes. I go as close as I can with a fair amount of paint on the brush to give me a gliding aquaplane, then go over it again whilst your aquaplane is still wet and then do the actual cutting in.

If you mess up, have a damp cloth and just wipe away and do it again.

Also remember, once it's finished, you hardly ever notice the bits you mess up.

Good luck.

As others have said, frogtape low tack is brilliant. Remove whilst the paint is still wet.

Nobody will notice the mistakes anyway. Really really look at the paint next time you're pretty much anywhere and you'll see how bad the general standard is.

I do this all the time OP. These are my best friendsSmile

@Redicleous

Ooh I've got some of them under the sink I think. I will have a look!

With the frog tape......I painted the turquoise yesterday. If I tape today, repaint the white won't it pull off the turquoise (even on a low tack one)?

After your suggestions last night I went on B&Q and the reviews are awful!!

White spirit on a cloth and wipe (best when paint is wet)

I’m intrigued to what happened in the end op :)
