Ball games in house?

Do you allow your children to play with balls in the house?

I very much think that ball games are for the garden. We also have a playroom outside- happy for balls to be bounced, thrown etc in there too.

But DP thinks IABU and actually, being allowed to play with balls casually, in the house is crucial for hand eye coordination development.

Personally, I think it leads to chaos and breakages and bearing in mind I do most of the day to day parenting, that's a stress I can do without.

Am I a fun sponge though?

YANBU- balls shouldn't be allowed in the house.

YABU- let them crack on with ball games inside.

Maybe it's not one or the other but a mixture of both?

When my DSs were young, the rule was no playing football, and no footballs or balls of that kind of size, indoors. But small, soft balls (Ie tennis ball size but softer in construction) were allowed and played with, ditto those little bouncy balls, bean bags etc so long as they were playing sensibly, not throwing them at the wall or at anything fragile. It seemed to work for us.

Little bouncy balls fine, We have a set of indoor skittles which I do allow…not actual ball games with larger hard balls.

AHungryCaterpillar · 21/03/2022 08:24

Yes mine do, I never really thought about it before but they aren’t allowed to play football just one that you would throw so not as big/heavy.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 21/03/2022 08:29

Mine could play with small or soft balls in the house, soft large balls ⚽️ were fine but obviously not for kicking just passing to each other

We did have about 10 footballs on the trampoline in the garden and they used to bounce and kick/throw them at each other…which now i think about it probably wasn’t the best idea but at least they were happy

I am a great believer in causing myself as little stress as possible so if you don’t want balls in the house then You don’t have balls in the house

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 21/03/2022 08:31

Oops

Should say that we turned our dining room into a playroom so balls weren’t allowed out of there

Tulips21 · 21/03/2022 08:31

My Dc have never been allowed to play ball games in house or at someone elses (eg their GPs house)
Ball games are for outside only imo

Of course it’s not crucial! There are plenty of way kids can develop hand eye coordination. They aren’t even banned from balls in the house full stop if they can play with them in the play room.
YANBU it’s fine to limit balls to one room or even outside.

My brother broke his toe playing football in the house when he kicked the wall.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 21/03/2022 08:44

God no. I can only imagine the chaos, breakages, pictures askew etc. We've never allowed balls inside the house and I don't see a huge hand-eye coordination lack in my cricket, rugby and football loving teenagers. Simple respect for the home you live in, and the adults providing it all for you, mean balls stay outside in my view.

BeyondMyWits · 21/03/2022 08:55

Soft foam balls, throwing back and forth or into a bucket are good for coordination. We allowed that sort of thing indoors at our house (some people don't allow any balls indoors, so we made sure the kids were aware it was only at home).

Inmyonesie · 21/03/2022 09:12

3 kids, all allowed to play with balls in the house, even football (kept at floor level only with a sponge ball). No breakages yet. Bet I've just jinxed myself.

incognitoforthisone · 21/03/2022 10:19

I'm sure throwing, catching and bouncing a ball is instead really good for coordination, but since you've got a playroom and a garden, they can do it there?! And there are loads of other things that are also helpful for eye-hand coordination.

Sswhinesthebest · 21/03/2022 10:24

I even banned balloons after breakages.

No chance!
