Posting here as no replies in living overseas.
Anyone any experience of using portable a/c units.
Recently move to Australia where it regularly is in the high 30s /low 40's in in the summer and low 20's in the winter.
House hunting but a lot of the property's I like (the older Victorian style) don't have A/C. Mixed online reviews from they are great to don't waste your money. Happy to spend the money if it works but wanted advice from anyone who actually uses them when its very hot.
Am I crazy (or to keep the theme of the subject title) AIBU to even consider about a house with no a/c?

How cold is cold? Im used to scraping ice of my car every morning, open fires, electric blankets and central heating on, cold-cold.

Google says expect days temps of around 20 during the cold months and also a lot of rain, or as we call it at home summer -hahaha

Sydney here, but a Brit.

Surprisingly freezing in winter, low is usually 13-15 in the day and I live in what would be described as a summer apartment which stays relatively cool, no air con, a couple of fans for at night on hot days.

In winter however, it's very often colder inside than outside. Single glazed, drafty windows and patio doors, it just doesn't retain any heat, so even with electric heater running it's never actually cosy warm.

Fans help but once the shitty humidity is high enough they won't do much. That's when air con is a blessed relief because it removes the humidity. I'm in Queensland where it gets humid.

@TherealMeghanMarkle don't bother with fancy Dyson fans. Go to Bunnings and get an industrial high velocity floor fan if you really want to get air moving. Looks like they don't have much stock of ordinary pedestal fans ATM but that's normal for the cooler months. Once the weather heats up again in spring they'll get fans in again. Get a fan that is at least 50 Watts so it has enough strength to move the air around a decent amount. The crappy fans from Big W, Kmart, etc are too weak and don't last more than a few years. Save your money. Aldi has a fan sale about twice a year. Their fans are pretty good.

Thank you so much to everyone who answered, we have decided not to go for that house and look for something with split air con.

By the sound of it and from reading reviews Dyson fans are more style over substance so they are off the list.

Thankfully I packed some warm clothes which by the sounds of it I may. E needing at some point.

Thanks again for all advice Smile
@TheWestIsTheBest - Where has the doctor gone this year? I've been here 9 years now, this is the 1st time I've had to complain about the heat, and luckily I was in Margs for the 6 days in a row, so missed the worst of it.
I am also here nine years, and this summer was the best yet ( I love the heat). But I have to say I was so happy to have decent aircon and a pool! We went to Margs for a long weekend just before Xmas, it was the first time I'd been down there when it was actually hot enough to go to the beach! Grin
