To wonder if we have some immunity to covid

My DS and I had what I think was covid in March 2020. Both of us were really ill and I was bed bound for 2 weeks - never been so rough. It was before testing though so can’t be sure.

We are both vaxxed but despite being exposed to covid on multiple occasions, have never had it again (massive touch wood obviously) and I am really anxious about it.

I have been in a car with someone for 2 hours & they tested positive a few hours later. Still didn’t get it.

The message is constantly that immunity fades but Aibu to think we must have developed some immunity from being so ill at the start? DS is in secondary & it’s rife & my other DC has had it from primary, as has DP. So we’ve had it in the house too.

I know there are variants which is what’s making me so anxious (I was so ill in March 2020- it was really scary)

I guess I just don’t get how, when everyone around me seem to be getting it agsin, why we haven’t. It’s not that I want it again but after being so ill the first time, I am also scared of getting it again.

Do you think you can build a baseline immunity even if you haven’t had all the variants?

I thought this until five days ago then it finally got me 🤨🤣

Cheeseplease1976 · 20/03/2022 20:46

@Cupcakegirl13 that’s the thing- I just keep expecting it to get us but it hasn’t 😬

sunlovingcriminal · 20/03/2022 20:46

@Cupcakegirl13 me too!!! Swerved it the whole time (I think!) then booooooom! Tested positive today 🤒

Cheeseplease1976 · 20/03/2022 20:47

Did either of you have it before too?

Also thought exactly the same thing - March 2020 and was so unwell with it. Not a sniff of it since, started to think I was bulletproof.

Now I’m currently on my second full day of it and it’s as bad as it was in March 2020.

Also vaxxed and had confirmed antibodies from an infection, last summer but that’s all clearly gone now as feel dreadful.

Jedsnewstar · 20/03/2022 20:49

Maybe or maybe not. My Dh never got it when we all had it. Then was exposed again in a cupboard room all day with a heating fan on with someone who tested positive the next day. Nowt. Thought he was immune. He got it last week. I know so many people like this, bragging about having a super immune system. Then get covid.

Sexnotgender · 20/03/2022 20:49

I’ve not had it yet, despite my DH having it a few weeks ago. Hoping I have some magical immunity 😂

Cheeseplease1976 · 20/03/2022 20:49

@DragonMamma hmm, so I am right to worry then! Am AMAZED it hasn’t got me again yet!!

OP posts:
DragonMamma · 20/03/2022 20:49

Sorry, just to clarify I didn’t have an infection last summer, they asked me to do a blood test and it was confirmed that I had the antibodies you get with infection but not been poorly with it since 15 months prior

DragonMamma · 20/03/2022 20:51

I felt exactly the same, had tested previously (as we were asked to) and had previous lurgy that wasn’t Covid.

Friday I just knew I had it again - burning throat and nose etc. it’s really ramped up this evening. Being doing LFT and it looks like I’m about 25 DPO in pregnancy test terms Envy

sunlovingcriminal · 20/03/2022 20:52

@Cheeseplease1976 not that I know of. And also had it in the house previously- my ds had it last November. Sigh!!!

BabbleBee · 20/03/2022 20:52

I’m pretty sure I had it at the beginning, just before Covid was well known. I’m fully vaccinated, work with Covid positive patients, nearly my whole team at work had it and I’d been in close contact with them and didn’t get it. 14yo DD has had it twice, symptomatic both times, I didn’t keep away from her but I was good with hand hygiene. She has learning difficulties and I was hugging her etc to comfort her. I thought the same, maybe I had enough immunity to avoid it.

Caught it from my asymptomatic 9yo DD in February Grin

Cheeseplease1976 · 20/03/2022 20:53

Possibly a stupid question, but if we compare it to flu- there are always new variants but people don’t catch it - I have only had flu once in my life. Can covid be similar?

OP posts:
HecatePecate · 20/03/2022 20:54

DH and DS had it June 2020 and I didn’t catch it even though I was with them the whole time.

I had it (different variant probably) December 2021. They didn’t catch it.

We now all have it again. All triple vaxxed. And I’m only just over 3 months post the previous infection. Infection seems much milder for all 3 of us this time. (But still unpleasant) Not sure if that is due to the variant or the vaccines.

Incidentally, I still have the covid recovery certificate thing on my NHS covid vaccine pass from the last bout. Does anyone know if that will stay as a permanent record or will it disappear after a set length of time? (Presumably I will shortly have two of them.) 🤔

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/03/2022 20:55

It’s possible, some homosexual men in San Francisco were found to have avoided hiv despite having partners who tested positive for it. I think they participated in research to find out why they’d been so lucky and this was in the 80/90’s when hiv was a death sentence.

EishetChayil · 20/03/2022 20:55

I think I caught it very early on before we knew what it was. I also haven't had it (as we know it) despite being exposed to it.

BobbinHood · 20/03/2022 20:58

I was thinking this as I didn’t understand how it could possibly have dodged me this long, with a child in nursery, teacher husband, public transport daily, been to pubs, restaurants, churches, theatres, been a close contact of people who’ve had it many times…

Tested positive today. Bleh.

organicapricot · 20/03/2022 20:58

I have wondered this if some people are just immune to it. DP and I have (luckily) not had covid at all and whilst we were following rules at the start we certainly haven't been overly cautious. We are both vaccinated now. I test regularly as I'm part of a ONS study and do lateral flows between these tests but nothing in 2 years. I think some people must just have an immunity perhaps. I'll probably test positive tomorrow now Grin

ButterflyBitch · 20/03/2022 21:01

I feel the same. The whole family had it oct 2020 and despite numerous exposures very recently from various people, none of us have caught it again. I have no idea how we’ve avoided it a second time.

Cheeseplease1976 · 20/03/2022 21:02

When my DP had it before Xmas & younger DC, I felt a bit rough but after testing everyday for 10 days plus a PCR, still nothing. Maybe I had a second dose that was too mild to show up on tests as it felt like my immune system was straining to repel something 🤷🏻‍♀️

I will probably test positive tomorrow now Grin

I genuinely thought I must be immune. Not had it at all, have commuted / travelled / worked in the office / gone to gigs, theatres etc, had contact with people who tested positive the next day etc etc. pretty smug tbh. Until I tested positive on Saturday morning........

DelilahBucket · 20/03/2022 21:03

Who knows. DH didn't get it despite me and DS having it and we didn't isolate from him. As far as we know, he's never had it, whereas I suspect I had it right at the start. Both him and I were triple vaxed when I got it from DS.
I actually think he didn't get it because he worked with the general public throughout the pandemic, whereas I work alone 60% of the time, and with 1-2 other staff at other times. I was also extremely run down when I got it and I had just returned to choir practice a few weeks earlier and I think my immune system was overloaded with germs after hardly coming across any for nearly two years.
I also know several people who have had it more than once, at times when different variants were in circulation. One of my friends had it during Alpha, asymptomatic, had it during Delta, very poorly, hasn't had it during Omicron.

stressbucket1 · 20/03/2022 21:04

Me and DH had it March 2020, 3 vaccinations each and in Dec 21 DD1 had it, no social distancing because she is too young and neither of us caught it from her. Thought we were immune too but DD2 tested positive and now me and DH have it. Much milder for us this time round.
DD1 who had it in Dec hasn't caught it again so far.

BeanStew22 · 20/03/2022 21:07

We are still learning about Covid : I have a friend or two who have managed to avoid it despite repeated exposures, we may find in time that some people have a natural immunity

What I am CERTAIN of though is there are many people who think they are immune/have had it - because this is a reassuring thought/psychological defence.

Personally I’d keep taking precautions to avoid infection/re-infection

Iseeyoulookingatme · 20/03/2022 21:10

I've not had covid yet. Ds had it in January, and we didn't isolate from each other, I honestly thought I had it then, but apparently not. I travel on public transport etc etc, God knows how I've managed to avoid it. Perhaps some people are immune to it.
