AIBU to not want to book a holiday while Putin is raging against the rest of the world?

OP posts:
ZenNudist · 20/03/2022 18:45

I'm not feeling good about blowing money when we could well need it to cover rising living costs. I'm well off but I have one extravagant holiday booked for may so holding back from a cheaper holiday abroad in August.

Bert2020 · 20/03/2022 18:49

Of course not, it’s your choice

SummerInSun · 20/03/2022 18:52

Yes, YABU. There is usually conflict somewhere in the world, and people are always suffering poverty, famine, disease, all manner of oppressive governments. It's dreadful. But "oh how can anyone possibly enjoy a holiday while there is a war" is just annoying virtue signalling (unless you have family and friends in the Ukraine, which would be different). If it makes you feel better, make an extra donation to a sensible charity.

TomAllenWife · 20/03/2022 19:06

YABU I would go on holiday whatever
Went several times during the pandemic (when allowed)

I can't see what Putin has to do with your choices

WhiteJellycat · 20/03/2022 19:09

Life is short. That's one thing I will keep with me from the pandemic. What is around the corner for any of us? Unless your planning to donate your holiday budget to the DEC what difference will it make?

People are dieing at the hands of horrific violence around the world daily. I remember a Iraqi woman telling me how ISIS entered Mosul in the night and how they went house to house slaughtering. How people ran bare foot. Watching the friend I was with sob at her story. But that was 2014 and it's happening somewhere every day.

Not grabbing life by both hands and living is your choice to make alone but I dont see why it will help victims of war or enrich your time on earth.

Freedom to do what you want when you want is actually a rare privilege denied to many.

BrioNotBiro · 20/03/2022 19:19

Do you mean AYBU in a virtue signalling way, or in a fearful of the conflict escalating way?

thisisrubbish · 20/03/2022 20:18

My reservations are more about whether there might be a risk to going to parts of Europe that might be closer to Russia and Ukraine

TomAllenWife · 20/03/2022 20:23

🙄🙄

TomAllenWife · 20/03/2022 20:24

I'm sure Putin is plotting his Costa del Sol invasion any day now

AnyFucker · 20/03/2022 20:26

I don’t imagine Putin is about to invade the Canary Islands very soon

I think as long as you holiday in a NATO country and avoid, say, Moldova and Belaruss, the risk is not much higher than usual.

Makes no difference because he's got nukes and can send them anywhere in the world.

YABU unless eg going to Poland/Ukraine border. But if you don't want to go or will be too worried then don't book it.

NeedleNoodle3 · 20/03/2022 20:28

YABU
I just returned from a Caribbean cruise and have four more holidays booked in the next five months. We’ve lost almost two years to the Pandemic, time to start doing things we enjoy now.

balalake · 20/03/2022 20:42

A holiday, yes book. Just choose somewhere you feel comfortable going to.

katscamel · 21/03/2022 10:02

I live in an ex-Russian country and dont feel particularly threatened. What is annoying though is that my flight back to the UK will now be a couple of hours longer as we can't fly over Russian airspace and apparently we have to stop to refuel before flying a different route.
It shouldn't be a problem for most people though....unless flying to China/East Asia.

If safety is your worry, stay towards Western Europe - Spain, Portugal, maybe Italy. Most reasonably cheap holiday destinations are a significant distance from Ukraine anyway. I might possibly avoid Bulgaria and Turkey if I was feeling particularly anxious, but to be honest, even that would be overkill unless things escalate dramatically.
notacooldad · 21/03/2022 10:11

Do whatever makes you comfortable. Why would it be unreasonable?

slashlover · 21/03/2022 10:12

Why WYBU to not book a holiday for any reason?
