To worry about the strong chemical smell from Aldi nappies

As soon as the pack is opened, there is an incredibly pungent chemical smell which lingers on each individual nappy.
It's really quite worrying and there is no information on the packaging about the materials and chemicals used in the nappies. I wonder how in this day and age, Aldi (and perhaps other brands) aren't legally obliged to be transparent about these baby products?

I'm really weary about the long list of potentially hazardous substances that I may be exposing my child to (almost constantly) in their nappy.
I know the simplest answer to this is to just buy reusable cloth nappies but I wondered if anyone had any more information they could share?

I'm a massive fan of cloth nappies. They are always going to be better for baby and environment, but I have 4 children and know they can be unrealistic at all times. My youngest is just in nappies at night now and I have gone to disposable for ease and found tesco do some called rascal and friend that are bleach and chemical free that I'm impressed with.

Pampers. I always end up going back to them even though I want to spend less.

DropYourSword · 19/03/2022 22:03

Seriously never had an issue with this.

SarahAndQuack · 19/03/2022 22:03

Everything's chemical, isn't it - can you be more specific?

We used aldi interchangeably with Pampers and found them fine, but it was a while ago so perhaps they've changed the formula.

Thanks Junobug, I'll check out the tesco nappies.
I find it very suspicious when there isn't any

I was saying...
I'm particularly suspicious when there isn't any information on the packaging about the product.

I don't have an Aldi nearby. I use Lidl nappies only but other supermarkets for everything else. I have just sniffed the nappies in interests of research for you and can smell nothing at all.

Dia12 · 19/03/2022 22:22

Thanks @Peasandcabbage!
Perhaps it's just that the nappies need to "air"? Maybe the chemical smell is from the plastic bag they are in and it's permeated into the nappies?!

Smell aside, I'd still like to know the materials and chemicals used in the nappies.

We use pampers pure. They are cotton and chemical free. Although they just rebranded cant remember what to. Loads of Nappies have chemicals they don't have to mention on the packet so yoi have to find the Nappies that tell you they done use chemicals instead. I wouldn't be having the ones you say stink.

Dia12 · 19/03/2022 22:34

Lol no that wasn't me!
But i am genuinely concerned about materials that sit on my child's skin 24/7 that smell like a chemical factory.
I'm not unwell, paranoid, neurotic....just trying to find out more.

Yes, I think I need to try some of the brands that advertise their nappies to be chemical free.

I use aldi nappies and have never noticed a chemical smell. But if you’re really worried maybe give them a message asking for more info.

I use Aldi nappies frequently and they don't smell of anything so this doesn't sound right at all. It sounds like a bad batch to me, contact Aldi about it.

Nothing, but NOTHING, is "chemical free"!

Ooh this just brought it all back from when my DC was a baby. This was 5 years ago now but I definitely remember thinking that Aldi nappies smelled like chemicals. I had the same thing with some pampers nappies too, but most other brands were ok. I don't know what the smell was but I just kept buying Tesco's and Sainsbury's own nappies and forgot all about it, until now. Sorry, not very helpful! Grin

I dont use ADLI as they've always given my son horrendous nappy rash. I use pampers which are much better
