As the weather is getting warmer, I would appreciate some mumsnet wisdom on the topic of outfit choices for physical activity.

I have a hobby which I do 2-3 times per week (I won’t say what it is because it might be outing). When I’m doing this hobby, I have a choice of outfits - one more revealing than the other. My DP strongly prefers me to wear the less revealing outfit, on the basis that exposing my hairy shoulders to the world is embarrassing for her and for our teenage DDs. I do however sweat like a pig, and therefore prefer the ventilation that the skimpier outfit affords. Should my DP’s and DDs’ emotional discomfort outweigh my physical comfortt?

YABU - I should cover myself up when running to spare my family’s embarrassment, even if I do melt into a sweaty puddle on the pavement.
YANBU - my body, my choice; if it’s not contravening any laws or exposing any nipples, I should wear whatever outfit is most comfortable to run in

YANBU. Unless you’re going out in a mankini or just the world’s skimpiest pair of speedos, comfort takes precedence over fashion for exercise. In the summer, I run in a sports bra and short shorts and give no fucks.

How hairy are these shoulders -- top side or under arm side?

Sparklesocks · 19/03/2022 23:03

I never understand why hobbies are outing as surely thousands of people do the same thing Grin

Some sports are outing. Not many people do Cycle Speedway for instance. If you said you're and adult male in Suffolk doing regular Cycle Speedway - it's outing.

OP said "running". That's dozens of ppl in even a very small town.

How hairy are these shoulders

Quite hairy, all over - significantly hairier than my head!

Who cares what you wear to run in. Just run, come home shower and put on regular clothes.

However, if you live in a small place, finish the run in the middle of the high Street and sit at a cafe on the pavement for a few hours talking to all and sundry and your outfit is very small, tight, day glow, more suited to a younger/more hench person....then I can kind of sympathise a little with your teenagers.

RedRobin100 · 20/03/2022 06:57

My husband is very hairy like that. Can’t say I love it - but also don’t think it’s very fair or nice of them to shame you like that - and you should probably
Explain that to them.

RedRobin100 · 20/03/2022 06:58

Pretty sure they wouldn’t be happy if you said same to them about having hairy legs or armpits..

20viona · 20/03/2022 07:04

@Sparklesocks agreed ridiculous!

soffritoes · 20/03/2022 07:16

Mumdiva99 - not usually any hanging around - straight back home afterwards. It's running along the local roads at the beginning and end of the run that's the main cause of their concern I think.

Run in whatever is comfortable. Running clothes are all about comfort and nothing to do with fashion. I am the only one who has any say in what I run in; dh and kids have no say in the matter whatsoever.
What on earth do they expect you to wear when you go swimming?

MinnieMountain · 20/03/2022 07:56

They’re being silly. How is that any different to exposing your (presumably) hairy legs?
