AIBU: chicken with raspberry jam and other shit food

51 replies

GoingBacktoSchool123 · 18/03/2022 22:36

Just watched a random pop up video on MN where chicken was marinated in raspberry jam. Why oh why the need to cover a healthy protein which can be made delicious in so many ways, with a shit load of sugar?? AIBU to think this is crap recipe and that MH should do better than promote it??

What other recipes fall into the category of total crap.

@longwayoff

Forget the jam. Watched Marcus Wareing in a clip on Gogglebox making an Eton Mess. MW has a new kitchen garden and appeared to be determined to use all of it. The Eton Mess included shop bought meringues, roasted stone fruits and a hefty amount of lavender. He made a praline to add to it which also included a hefty amount of lavender. And to finish off the abomination, another good sprinkling of lavender. Utterly revolting and, I would guess, completely inedible. Ugh.
Yuck. Lavender in anything is horrible. What a way to kill an Eton Mess.

Has anyone actually made the raspberry jam chicken?

It sounds unappetising, but foods in honey and mustard, sweet and sour with various sugars / fruits, red currant jelly, are all common.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 19/03/2022 08:41

Ham in coke is practically a MN cliche.

ClariceQuiff · 19/03/2022 08:43

I always have apple sauce with chicken.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 19/03/2022 08:47

I've been asked why I pay for Mumsnet Premium. Now I know. Raspberry Jam Chicken, and Salmon Vomit

Just for the count

  • peanut butter and jam is delicious. In the USA you can buy ready made frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
  • as are Dairylea and marmalade sandwiches (extra points for white sliced bread and added butter)
  • DH has mustard with all roasts - including chicken and lamb - verging on LTB

Everything else on @BeautifulGreenEyes list is an abomination

RJnomore1 · 19/03/2022 08:49

This thread has made me laugh this morning.

Chicken sweet and sour, hoi sin, plum sauce, etc etc etc - all sweet sauces so adding something sugary to chicken is hardly new. Chicken is not a naturally moist meat it does need some help. I’m not sure the jam sounds amazing with it but it’s hardly totally off the wall too.

And the outrage at eating chicken with rice 😂 omg

Some veggies would definitely a good addition though

RJnomore1 · 19/03/2022 08:50

I probably shouldn’t mention how good a string cheese is with fruit cake here should I?

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 19/03/2022 08:52

I was round at the house of an acquaintance last year. She was boiling a ham joint in coke for dinner.

In COKE! 🤮

ineedsun · 19/03/2022 08:56

Lavender cheese is bloody lovely. I’ve only seen it once and never able to get hold of any more

MrsClatterbuck · 19/03/2022 09:11

This reminds me of being in the states years ago. We were staying with a family and they had organised a bbq and they had what looked like small trifles which people put on their plate along with their burgers and ribs etc. My late mil worked in the American naafi during the war and was amazed to see the troops have jam with their scrambled eggs .

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/03/2022 09:15

Ham in coke is great. Its basically a vegetable stock with sugars to glaze it up.
Just ask Nigella.

lapasion · 19/03/2022 09:19

I had noro the other week and all I could manage to do was lie on my side, scrolling through Mumsnet while attempting to keep it in both ends. Great time for that ‘scrummy’ fish vomit to pop up. Bloody not-Carol Voderman.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 19/03/2022 09:20

@BeautifulGreenEyes

Probably not along the same lines, but I know several people who have peanut butter and jam on a sandwich, and a couple of people who dip their Mcdonalds fries in their milkshake. Also, a person who has mint sauce on chicken! Just why? Confused

Also, I know people who have peanut butter on BUTTERED toast!

Finally, I know someone who eats cakes (like donuts and scones,) with a knife and fork, and who also eats NAAN bread with a knife and fork. Oddly, they never do this in public; proving that they know it's batshit weird!

Eh?

All those things sound completely normal to me Grin

Underfrighter · 19/03/2022 09:23

I agree OP I see it frequently on here. I love trying out new recipes and combinations of flavours...but I've never ever eaten chicken and thought 'you know what, this could really do with some jam'

Grasping · 19/03/2022 09:26

Can I give you ….. peanut butter and lime pickle. Try it!

pilates · 19/03/2022 09:26

I made the chicken and jam out of curiosity. Let’s just say it won’t be repeated. It looked nothing like the picture either.

NaomhPadraigin · 19/03/2022 09:26

@kizzywizz

I'm so glad someone else thought it was Carol Vorderman, I think it everytime I see it.
I always see Carol Vorderman too! 😄 @Grasping, it's Annabel Karmel
Ponoka7 · 19/03/2022 09:30

I got converted to peanut butter and jelly by Lidl. They get Goober P&J in the specials every few months. It's grape and peanut. I don't see the difference between the raspberry chicken and putting Piccalilli, sweet and sour on chicken etc. I put cranberry sauce on chicken, as well as Turkey. Apple sauce on pork, orange on duck, wensleydale with cranberries or apricots etc. My GM would put apricot jam on meat sandwiches. As a child they made jams, but butter was expensive. I'm always surprised when people haven't tried cheese with fruit etc.

GaspingGekko · 19/03/2022 09:30

A few years back I went for a long run one evening, leaving DH to make dinner.
2 and a half hours later I come home for DH to present chicken stuffed with strawberry jam. I ate it. I vomited. He claims it was the effect of the run. It was clearly because of the chicken.

Vampirethriller · 19/03/2022 09:32

Mature cheddar and strawberry jam sandwiches are nice actually.

HardbackWriter · 19/03/2022 09:40

I agree it doesn't look great (but I don't eat meat anyway), and definitely it's an annoyingly repetitive advert, but on the other hand I made sweet and sour tofu for dinner last night which, given it had sugar in the sauce and included pineapple, probably wasn't all that different really... And it was delicious and polished off by the whole family.

isthismylifenow · 19/03/2022 09:41

Has anyone seen the video of the popcorn toppings? . Now that one is just ridiculous . It starts out quite OK with melting m&m's and mixing them in, but the longer it goes on, the more ridiclous it gets... They even add prawns in.

I think they just think all sorts of shit up to make the video longer.

Jam and chicken isn't a new thing though. I use apricot quite a bit. (cup of jam, cup of mayo, cup of fruit juice mixed up and shove in the oven over chicken pieces)

But I agree, some foodie videos I see do make me 🤔

Snoopsnoggysnog · 19/03/2022 09:42

I thought everyone buttered their toast before adding peanut butter! It sticks in your throat otherwise!

EatSleepReplete · 19/03/2022 09:46

@ineedsun this is lovely.
