To be upset by - and hate - the WWF TV ads? (TW warning re. animal cruelty)

The elephants, tigers, cheetahs, orang-utans, rhinos......
And now the pangolin.
I KNOW that what happens is dreadful, and I support the WWF (even interviewed for a job with them some years ago). BUT having dead and dying animals thrust at me, before I can get to the remote.
I had not seen the pangolin one before and seeing it really upset me for the day. And then later on, there was a small monkey in captivity that was simply hanging by a chain round its neck! (Not sure if that actually was WWF to be honest.)
I try not to be too previous, and am aware that WWF need to get the message out - but some of these are just TOO much - and I always reach for the remote before they even get going, so - for me at least - the message is lost. I just want to cry - and am of course, utterly powerless.

Fellow vegan here. I agree, very upsetting, as is all animal abuse.

That’s afternoon Tv for you one long round of starving blind or abused kids donkeys cats etc Communities with no water or education or the oceans dying. Does start to get you down when it’s on a loop. You can only do so much and support one or two charities.

The advert that I find the most upsetting is the one where the bear cubs are crying for their mums - I'm in tears every time I see that. The WWF tiger one is also hard to watch.

LoveMyPiano · 18/03/2022 19:34

Just to add - I haven't been watching TV all day every day, I promise.

I am just so surprised that some of it is allowed; (Warning - mention of animal harm follows)

I never realised that the baby rhino was lying in a pool of it's own blood haing had it's horn taken - and the pangolin is shown alive and snuffling around one minute, scooped up terrified into a bag the next, and then as a dried and hardened corpse. It curls up thinking it's scales will protect it - but that is what they are wanted for!
I remember the really shocking scene from Gorillas in the Mist - and these do feel not so far from that.
If children caught sight of these "ads", would they not be terribly upset as well?

It makes me angry as charities are cynically targetting easily influenced people (mainly the elderly) when they go for afternoon slots. You don't see these ads in the evening. I have realised this after two fairly recent spells of illness when I've been flicking through the channels of an afternoon trying to find something to watch.

Obviously they are cheaper (afternoon advertising slots) but it just puts me off watching. As pp said, one can only support so many charities.

The shock, horror and upset is exactly what they are going for as it earns them a hell of a lot of money. I would be interested to know how much of the donations actually go to the wildlife and how much goes to ceos, pr companies, TV companies etc.

Yes, there is of course=-as with many other charities - that particular question.

Maybe I have become softer/more or too sensitive, but I cannot watch them all the way through any more - and don't think i ever would have been able to. But I don't think such things were allowed to be shown until recently, surely?

Agree! I absolutely hate it! Yes I know it happens, as does many terrible things in the world but I really don’t need to see it whilst trying to watch friends! It’s one of the reasons I only watch things on sky+ so I can fast forward.

Bundlesofchocforme · 18/03/2022 19:52

Yes I agree entirely. It also enrages me when they try to persuade viewers to ‘adopt’ an animal. DD got very distressed when she saw one of these and asked if I paid £5 a month for her (as she is adopted). They care nothing for their viewers or the impact of their ads

Ah, poor sweetheart - and bless her for thinking that. Obviously, she is priceless!

Yes, I have been watching more on demand and streaming of film, documentaries and box sets rather than terrestrial, and I think that's why there was the shock of it being thrust at me, whether I wanted to see it or not! If these acts were on a TV programme, I am sure there would be a warning at the start.
