Geographic tongue

ForensicFlossy · 18/03/2022 18:32

Geographic tongue was my first thought

Xpologog · 18/03/2022 18:49

You learn something every day. I’ve never heard of geographic tongue.

Sounds harmless.

Imgoingbacktothestart · 18/03/2022 19:18

I’ve never heard of it either 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wonder why she’s got that, how weird

I’ve had this my entire life and never had a diagnosis. After looking up geographic tongue it seems spot on! Thanks OP for starting a thread (and for peace of mind I’m now mid-30s and none the worse for it)

Imgoingbacktothestart · 18/03/2022 20:29

@Igotjelly That’s reassuring! Must just be ‘One of those things’ 🤷🏻‍♀️

My DH has that and it’s associated with gluten intake for him.

Frenchtoastie · 18/03/2022 20:49

Median rhomboid glossitis.
Nothing to worry about

Imgoingbacktothestart · 18/03/2022 23:39

@Merryoldgoat Is he gluten intolerant? Does it cause this?

OP posts:
tearingmyhearout242 · 18/03/2022 23:40

I have that and it comes and goes. Never thought anything of it. I have no intolerances.

Imgoingbacktothestart · 18/03/2022 23:46

@Frenchtoastie Looking at images online, it doesn’t look like it so much

OP posts:
MarmiteCoriander · 18/03/2022 23:49

OP- Did this only appear recently, or has it been there since birth?

ForensicFlossy · 18/03/2022 23:50

I had geographic tongue once about 15 years ago. No reason, never came back.

romystar · 19/03/2022 00:04

I think it’s caused by low vitamin b12 levels?

Imgoingbacktothestart · 19/03/2022 00:07

@MarmiteCoriander Not since birth, but she had a funny spot type thing on it last year, the dentist confirmed it was nothing and not a problem. This is bigger recently

sleepylittlebunnies · 19/03/2022 00:22

I took my DD12 when younger to 3 doctors to find out what it was, no one knew so she was referred to dermatology. I asked at my appointment for a quick opinion and the Dr knew straight away it was Geographic Tongue so referral was cancelled. She had very bad eczema when younger but grew out of it aged 9. The map on her tongue still comes and goes.

NoToAdolfPutler · 19/03/2022 00:40

Oral thrush can present like this

SomePosters · 19/03/2022 02:03

Have they had a lollipop or boiled sweet recently?

Thinking2041 · 19/03/2022 02:50

At the dentist once the dentist told his assistant to come and see my geographic tongue. I hadn’t noticed it. It’s come and gone ever since and caused me no bother at all.

Thinking2041 · 19/03/2022 02:56

I didn’t know it might be linked to low b12. I can’t find definitive evidence online that that’s the case but it is suggested. And I do know I always struggle with my b12 levels.

I’d buy some vitamins.
Whilst it isn’t a problem it is a form of inflammation so tackling the cause-especially if as easy as some vitamin supplements - seems sensible

Merryoldgoat · 19/03/2022 07:51
@Merryoldgoat Is he gluten intolerant? Does it cause this?
He’s never been diagnosed but he clearly isn’t good with gluten and avoids the big hitters like bread and pasta.

When he stops eating them for a while his tongue goes smooth and he stops being so smelly.

SheWoreYellow · 19/03/2022 07:57

People with geographic tongue can be very sensitive to spicy food, lemon or mint (ie it hurts their tongue), so watch out for that.

Imgoingbacktothestart · 19/03/2022 09:41

@Merryoldgoat Smelly how?

OP posts:
Imgoingbacktothestart · 19/03/2022 09:42

@SomePosters No 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Merryoldgoat What symptoms does he have after bread, pasta etc?
