My mum is too nervous to go to the hairdressers due to Covid as my dad has cancer. She hasn’t coloured her hair for 2 years now. I though I would treat her and bought some esalon dark blonde hair colour for her. Her hair was a mousy brown colour with some grey. I dyed her hair this morning but it looks too red/ ginger. I could tell she was disappointed but tried to be complementary. I want to improve it but don’t know how. Obviously out of my depth but trying to do a nice thing. Would you buy josh wood cool shot gloss to improve or any other suggestions please. Please don’t say go to the hairdresser as she won’t.

Bless her OP, what a shame. I'm not a hairdresser but hopefully some will come along, a picture might help for when or if they do.

Personally I would contact esalon for help, since it is their product. A blue shampoo might take some of the redness out but it really depends how intense it is. I wouldn't add anything until i'd spoken to them or received professional advice.

Are your DM and DD isolating entirely with you? I say this kindly as someone who is also very clinically vulnerable but if they are having visitors or attending hospital for treatment etc, the risk of a one off hairdresser trip at a quiet time, or a home hairdresser who would be willing to work in the garden now the weather is warmer might not be any tangible increase in risk and could possibly be an option if all are vaccinated and wearing masks. Obviously this is for them to decide but just a suggestion.

Hope you can get it sorted one way or another.

Would she consider having a hairdresser come to the house to fix it, have it done in the garden?

She's going to have consider roots too?

I think Josh Wood do a colour consultation where they can give you tips over Facetime. Or contact your own salon and see if you can pay someone to do similar for you?

I'm not a hairdresser but being a brunette who has gone blonde a few times (and had to deal with the inevitable brassy tones) I would suggest a purple shampoo or purple toner to knock out the brass. If you go to Boots, you'll you'll able to find these easily.

Silver or purple toner, plus the shampoo. It'll turn out lovely
