AIBU Another one about when to get emergency medical treatment...

I had a baby 9 months ago. My first period postpartum started about 7 weeks ago... and hasn't stopped. It is very, very heavy (I am wearing period pants with a towel on top and changing the towel more than once an hour, and still changing my clothes a couple of times per day... I am also passing big clots). My doctor prescribed a drug called Provera which is progesterone. It stopped the bleeding for 5 days but then it started again. Now it is as heavy as it was so I have to stop the Provera. I'm terrified it will get even heavier. The cramping also seems to be getting worse.

My doctor is doing blood tests to see if I'm anaemic but doesn't seem to have any other suggestions for how to stop the bleeding beyond 'wait and see.'

The doctor is referring me for an ultrasound but she said that could take 6 weeks. The earliest private gynaecology appointment I can get is in 4 weeks.

AIBU to wonder what I am supposed to do? Can I just bleed like this for another 4, 5, 6 weeks...?

Any experiences/advice appreciated. I would take myself off to A&E or similar but I don't know if there's much they could do.

I'm sorry you're going through this it sounds scary. I would go to A&E it sounds like you can't wait six weeks for an ultrasound and if nothing else you'll be seen quickly.

Ask the dr for tranexamic acid. It stops bleeding, although I would try and see a different dr tbh.

Progesterone made me bleed solidly for 5 months!

You've had heavy bleeding for 7 weeks now, non-stop?

That's not a period. I dunno what it is, but it's not a simple period.

How can you NOT be anemic?!

Grumblegard · 17/03/2022 22:04

Yes, I know, it doesn't feel like a period to me either Sad

I've totally had enough of it tonight.

Yes, bleeding heavily for 7 weeks (with 5 days off when Provera initially worked).

Poor you! I’d try 111 or a different GP if possible. A&E is a total nightmare in a lot of places at the moment, I would use it as a last resort.

I know you bleed monthly from a period, but this isn’t that. You are bleeding. I’m a nurse and the advice we give is if the bleeding continues, returns up to two weeks after, or becomes more severe, you should seek medical advice. If you don’t go tonight I really do think you should go to a walk in tomorrow.
How are you feeling otherwise? Not always a useful question to a new mum, as so often we feel rubbish for quite a while after giving birth.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 17/03/2022 22:25

Tranexamic acid will probably stop it. Can you get to see the doctor first thing tomorrow?

Grumblegard · 17/03/2022 22:25

I'm very sore with cramping, and honestly I feel knackered (but new mum, as you say).
