Would you know how to access the dark web?

Just that.

Whenever someone appears to be convicted of child abuse, accessing violent porn etc they always seem to trot out the cliche that they came across the images by mistake or that they were downloaded to them when they were downloading something else.

And for some obscure reason they always have their band of loyal supporters who believe them.

But quite apart from the fact that it’s obviously lies, I was always under the impression that to access that kind of material you had to visit the dark web, and so accessing that kind of thing in error is in fact not possible.

But how many people would actually know how to access the dark web? And if they wouldn’t how could anyone believe that these kinds of things could be stumbled upon in error?

Would you know how to access the dark web? Not for nefarious purposes obviously, but just in general. If you wanted to access it, would you know how?

Tiny polite reminder that the term is child abuse images, or indecent images of children, rather than child porn.

megletthesecond · 17/03/2022 17:52

No. And I have no desire to.

I didn't know it could bypass countries Internet blocks though. I can see how it could be useful.

DaisyDreaming · 17/03/2022 18:01

I wish you needed the dark web for child abuse, it’s everywhere. Lots of disgusting people claim they accidentally downloaded it but it is possible (not when they have hundreds of thousands of images they all happened to accidentally download).

Some places you can easily get child sexual abuse images include Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, pornhub and so many more. You don’t need to be be on the dark web

I don’t know much about the dark web, as far as I’m aware you start by downloading tor.

Jedsnewstar · 17/03/2022 18:16

I have no idea how to get on the dark web but I always assumed there would be lots of child abuse material on the real web, just the nastier stuff on the dark web.
I do agree though it’s always bull when they try the “I accidentally stumbled upon the 2000 images (saved on my computer in a file I accidentally labelled holiday pics)”

crispmidnightpeace · 17/03/2022 18:38

I don't know how to access the dark web but if I wanted to (which I do not) I would simply find out. First port of call would be online but if you're into that stuff you will have friends who can just tell you.

According to who and why?
Doingtheboxerbeat · 17/03/2022 18:41

I am astounded by the level of ignorance on this thread - there has been legitimate reasons as to why someone would use it, but posters are continuing to use the words "criminals" and "perverts" to describe people living in cut - off - from the world, Russia.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 17/03/2022 18:42

@crispmidnightpeace because the term "porn" implies it's consensual.

I have literally just found out that I have almost installed in the past simply because my show was taken off Netflix but was available in Canada. The advisor never mentioned it was the dark net 😕, but I binned it because it seemed way too complicated 😁.

I see, not to me since coercion is not consent but see what you mean.

@XDownwiththissortofthingX

Yes, because there are perfectly legitimate reasons for using the applications that facilitate it.
Like what? Genuine question? What is on the dark web that's not on the normal one?

Many countries (China, Russia) censor the internet and the dark web is a way around that censorship. Journalists and the police also use it to access things that their countries block access to, and to talk to people whose internet access would otherwise be monitored.

I am sure that how we word it has no bearing at all at the awful things that kids have been made to do already.
Doingtheboxerbeat · 17/03/2022 18:57

@sophienelisse - there has been so many examples - if you read the thread. The most common one is for people of Russia to access real information about what is happening.

VampireMoney · 17/03/2022 19:00

Yes. There are entirely legal and legitimate reasons for accessing the dark web, as pp have outlined.

The 'deep web' is an entirely different kettle of fish though.

ouch321 · 17/03/2022 19:04

Yes via theTOR browser.

Some twats sold my (and probably others') credit card details there so I became a card fraud victim.

Thank you I posted before I had read the full thread but yes it makes perfect sense now why people would access it.

No, but it doesn't hurt to use the correct terminology.

There is no such thing as "child porn" - it's indecent images of children.

sophienelisse · 17/03/2022 19:13

@fairylightsandwaxmelts thank you for your explanation. I normally read the full thread before I comment but I didn't today.

mrsmolks · 17/03/2022 19:13

All the kids know. I woukdnt go near it

Catclean · 17/03/2022 19:14

Yes if I wanted to because all the advice you need on how to do it safely is available with a simple Google search.

jesuisavecukraine · 17/03/2022 19:23

My husband works in IT, and I said I worry about accidently accessing the dark web, and he laughed and said it's not something you can accidently do; you need to download special software as your usual browsers Chrome, explorer etc are not linked to dark Web.
Anyone who says they did it by accident is a liar that should be locked up until their dying day for looking at that vile material and it's always 100% intentional as you can't just stumble across the dark Web when browsing Google.

Tiddlesthecat · 17/03/2022 19:23

I've often wondered thus myself. Had never heard of Tor. It's all beyond me!

Me neither

Thank goodness

The 'deep web' is an entirely different kettle of fish though.

The deep web is nothing sinister at all, it's mostly just stuff hidden behind personal log-ins, like your online banking, social media, mumsnet profile etc. It's just anything which isn't indexed by search engines, which is a ton of perfectly legitimate stuff.
