Aibu in being pissed off that mei mei's mum actually offers scented pads as an option.
Why. Recipe for discomfort.

@outlookstalking
They're a recipe for thrush.
Oh quick get some fragrance on your smelly fanny. No!

@plumbbear2 the mum says it

I understand why some people don't like scented (I avoid them) but they are common enough and it seems an odd thing to focus in on. In the context of the film the point is she's gone overboard with all the options and they are one of the options.

Instead I'd be impressed they're mentioning periods as part of a normal thing and in a kids movie. I really dont think I've seen that before and was something my girls and I noticed. And had a laugh at the mum!

ParisLondonTokyoSlough · 17/03/2022 09:41

I do get that it’s suggested for bigger kids but things like this always bug me a bit because how many 10/11 year olds are dying to go and watch a Disney Pixar cartoon movie about a girl who turns into a panda?

I’m an adult and would have got a Disney+ subscription for the Disney and Pixar animations, even if I didn’t have kids! Those type of animated movies are usually made for a wide age range so parental judgment is needed.

QuizzicalEyebrows · 17/03/2022 16:16

I didn't even know they still sold scented liners in the UK. I didn't notice it in the film at all. Just that she got a huge OTT selection to give her. I presume they're more for the US market perhaps.

QuizzicalEyebrows · 17/03/2022 16:18

What a bizarre thing to get 'pissed off' about in a film. The choice is ultimately a personal one

NeedAHoliday2021 · 17/03/2022 16:23

Loads of pads are scented these days - I wish they weren’t because they smell weird imo and are pointless but as someone who is prone to thrush, scented pads have never caused it for me. It’s a weird thing to be agitated about. I’m guessing some people like them considering how many are on the shelves. I’ve moved to reusables mostly now.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 17/03/2022 16:25

And omg my 10yo twins would love the idea of a character turning into a Panda! What are your 10yos watching?

Cas112 · 17/03/2022 16:26

I cant believe I actually know what your referring to haha

thebellsesmereldathebells · 17/03/2022 16:27

A lot of women object to the existence of scented pads, because they reinforce the message that women's natural bodies are smelly/disgusting/need masking or ameliorating with artificial chemicals (which are actually pretty bad for the body and do cause thrush and discomfort for many women)

It's a small bugbear in the context of this movie, which is breaking ground by mentioning periods at all, but it's a shame they couldn't go the whole hog and NOT mention scented pads.

Cas112 · 17/03/2022 16:29

@Kanaloa

*It's rated PG and the rating clearly says "may not be suitable for younger children".

Common sense media suggests age 9+.*

I do get that it’s suggested for bigger kids but things like this always bug me a bit because how many 10/11 year olds are dying to go and watch a Disney Pixar cartoon movie about a girl who turns into a panda?

Although it’s suggested for kids 9 plus it’s clearly aimed at those who are younger.

My sister who is twelve next month was dying to watch it..

To be repeated 'Common sense media suggests age 9+'

gogohm · 17/03/2022 16:31

My dd watched it, she's 23. Pixar isn't just for little kids

EdithRea · 17/03/2022 17:05

@Porfre

It was an ok movie.

But some of the language is t suit6for younger kids- stripper music, perv

Now my kids are asking what's a stripper

They're not though, are they.

Disney/Pixar films are full of words and jokes little kids don't understand. Always have been.

Walk down the pad aisle. The scented Always section will knock you out faster than a branch of Lush.

If you really cared about the issue you'd be writing strongly worded letters to Always, whose UK pads are heavily - overpoweringly - scented. Take aim at them, if it's such a big deal.

LrrrRulerOfOmicronPerceI8 · 17/03/2022 18:01

Why does she hate her daughter?! When she finds mei meis cringy weird pictures of that bloke and assumes he's trying to use her... Not that mei mei is 13

SheldonsStainedSpot · 17/03/2022 19:14

@EdithRea

I wrote to always when they changed everything to scented. They told me that, from their surveys, women are embarrassed about their own smells and prefer scented pads. I’d love to know how many women they surveyed because the scented pads smell vile 😂🤣

hmmm... i use a femmecup so haven't bought pads for years but got caught out by an early arriving period while away last month - had to go to a second supermarket because the first one ONLY had scented pads so definitely still more common than not!

I'm 38 and watched it the day it came out Blush
hazandduck · 17/03/2022 19:29

I loved this film! Made by an all-female team too apparently and I think you can tell. Love that periods and even puberty through a female gaze is being normalised including their little crushes and things (love her foot stamp and shout of “aruba” when she sees her crush). Reminded me of going through puberty especially as it’s set in 2002, so literally 20 years ago when I was the same age as Mei Mei and her pals. Teenage girls are usually so poorly written. It also made me miss my old Tamagotchi!

I don't think she hates her but it's Asian culture to respect your parents and work hard etc. So instead of seeing Mei Mei as a normal teenager with interests she views everything in a negative light as corrupting Mei Mei.
TimeForTeaAndG · 17/03/2022 19:54

Or maybe since she knows that Mei Mei will become a red panda at some point she doesn't want to admit that Mei Mei is growing up so it couldn't possibly be a crush.

Gizacluethen · 17/03/2022 20:01

Women have a right to choose scented pads if that's what they want to use.

ChocolateCakeYum · 17/03/2022 20:05

Loved the movie, so did my son.
