Krakow for a getaway. Would you deem it safe or would you not go? Bare in mind the trip is non refundable

I think it’s safe but I would check in advance what open and etc as they are pretty busy in Krakow atm.

"It’s a couple of hours from the border. Over 150 miles."

Perception of distance is key I guess..

Figrollface · 16/03/2022 21:36

We planned on going the end of next month and are glad we had free cancellation.
I can't imagine feeling any enjoyment while surrounded by refugees who've just had their whole lives wrecked.
Most of the hotels we stayed in previously have very generously offered up rooms to refugees.

It’s certainly far enough that you’re not going to be hit by a stray bullet!

It’s about half the distance between Cyprus and Syria.

deadlanguage · 16/03/2022 21:42

Half the distance as between, that should say (Cyprus to Syria is just over 300 miles)

FindingMeno · 16/03/2022 21:43

I definitely go.

My sister and BIL were there last weekend and said it was a wonderful place, and no concerns re safety at all. Was booked last Nov though.
RobotValkyrie · 16/03/2022 22:27

I'd be somewhat concerned about the current Ukraine refugee crisis making some places a bit more busy and chaotic than normal (e.g. the UK visa processing center was struggling to handle crowds not long ago)
That could impact certain roads and train stations, and possibly other public places (not sure where/how Ukrainian refugees are being processed in Poland. But in the UK last summer, hotels were booked to host Afghan refugees. And I guess that meant less rooms for tourists)

I wouldn't call that unsafe, but perhaps not the best time and place to have a holiday (then again, your touristy plans may be entirely unaffected by the humanitarian crisis)

sweetbellyhigh · 16/03/2022 22:30

@theemmadilemma

The Polish infrastructure is struggling to cope with the influx of people. I would not go given the conversation I had with my Polish friend yesterday.
Yes it would be tone deaf to expect to holiday in Poland and even if you did forge ahead, you could expect massive problems with everyday activities.
QuebecBagnet · 16/03/2022 22:38

My Polish friend who lives here was meant to be going to visit relatives next month and has cancelled it due to the current situation which surprised me.

AnnaSW1 · 16/03/2022 22:38

It's safe

SunshinePie · 16/03/2022 22:44

Geez I wouldn’t be going, it’s literally next door to Ukraine!

This was on the news yesterday!

Not only could aggression spread into Poland, but also radiation.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 16/03/2022 22:51

Absolutely no way I'd go. They bombed 15 miles from the Polish border a few days ago and the country must be swamped with traumatised refugees.

I wouldn't judge anyone who did go but its not something I'd feel comfortable doing

GrumpyPanda · 16/03/2022 22:57

Perfectly safe but Krakow is jam-packed with refugees and close to breaking point like all big Polish cities. Have you booked a package tour? If so, best to check with the operator, or if individual bookings, with the hotel.

Cleothecat75 · 16/03/2022 22:57

I wouldn’t be concerned about safety in Poland, I’d be more concerned that a country has had two million refugees in the past three weeks and wondering how on Earth they were housing, feeding and managing to care for All those people.

I wouldn’t be going for that reason. I love people watching, but I don’t think I’d feel very relaxed watching people who have fled a war zone trying to complete every day tasks while trying to live in (for example) a Disused shopping mall (This example was given on the bbc news earlier in the week- they have turned a shopping centre in to a refugee centre, rows and rows of camp beds, they’ve fitted showers/bathrooms etc, little play areas for the children).

eightlivesdown · 16/03/2022 23:04

Go. Great city. Safe. Poland needs tourist cash to help it pay for the refugee influx.

@phishy

Given Poland's treatment of brown and black refugees fleeing Ukraine, I would not be giving Poland any of my tourist money.
I am going to report you for this comment. This is a blatant lie and slander - Polish authorities have announced repeatedly that everyone is welcome and it is the case in practice. You might have confused with other countries or indeed with Ukrainian border force. Vile comment.

OP. I am Polish. You are safe to go and Krakow isn't as busy as Warsaw at the moment. Go and enjoy yourself, it is safe, it might be busier than it would've been otherwise, but tourists are by all means welcome, as always.

TheVanguardSix · 17/03/2022 00:13

Give me strength.

InexperiencedDogOwner · 17/03/2022 00:27

My Polish friend was due to go back for a few days for a holiday to catch up with friends but cancelled losing her flight money. She said she couldn't enjoy herself on a holiday when there would be so much trauma going on around her. Unfortunately I don't think it's really a holiday destination at the moment.

RedDots · 17/03/2022 01:01

Like PP above, friend was going early June but Jet2 have cancelled flights

deadlanguage · 17/03/2022 11:34

@jytdtysrht

Neither of these will happen. The prevailing wind is the other direction, for starters.
