Sunscreen and pregnancy - help

Apologies for posting here, it's mainly for traffic.
Hoping for some opinions/experience on using sunscreen whilst pregnant.
I am currently pregnant (6+6) and am anxious about a holiday we have already booked for June. I have very fair skin and prior to going abroad I would have used sunbeds for about 6 weeks which worked exceptionally well in preventing me from burning whilst away.
Obviously this year that is not an option, and I will have to lather up in sunscreen, but I am also reading that most sunscreens are not safe for use in pregnancy?
Can I ask for advice re specific brands you used during pregnancy? Or AIBU to think lots of people do not know about this and use "standard" sunscreen anyway?

I didn't know you can't use sunscreen. Where is this advice from. I think in America there are some issues with cosmetics and pregnancy but the ingredient that's the issue isn't used in the EU.

FWIW I went away when 10 weeks pregnant and used Nivea sun the whole time.

Where did you read this?

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 16/03/2022 12:47

That's the first time I've ever heard of that. Where did you get it from?

Findahouse21 · 16/03/2022 12:48

My midwife didn't steer me away from any suncreams in either pregnancy

RomeoMcFlourish · 16/03/2022 12:49

Never heard of this. There’s no warnings on bottles of sun cream either.

AgathaMystery · 16/03/2022 12:50

This is not a thing

ReeseWitherfork · 16/03/2022 12:51

I'd generally advise against going down a rabbit hole of googling stuff. In pregnancy and beyond. Stick to whatever your midwife says and the NHS website. And I promise I'm saying this in an attempt to be kind.

Onlyforcake · 16/03/2022 12:52

What evidence have you seen of sunscreen being unsuitable during pregnancy? I am very fair, I've used sunblock during all of my pregnancies to avoid getting burned to avoid the resultant dehydration as well as skin damage. I generally use Nivea but sometimes the soltan one from boots.

luxxlisbon · 16/03/2022 12:53

I’ve also never come across anything that says this.

Hope90x · 16/03/2022 12:54

To answer the main question, it was mainly from a Google search of "is sunscreen safe whilst pregnant". It came back with lots of hits however mainly blogs, forums, healthline, cosmopolitan etc.
The main theme seems to be that they recommend organic or mineral based and explain that a number of ingredients in standard sunscreen are harmful, including: see attached pic.

Hi OP, I made an effort to use suncream less in pregnancy. I did this by just covering up as much as possible, I had a big hat and lots of floaty long sleeved clothes.

I am a bit woo in general though about what chemicals go into my skin, I don’t really know anyone else who made an effort to avoid it.

Hope90x · 16/03/2022 12:57

Pic didn't attach. Ingredients:
Homosalate
Ocybenzone
Octocrylene
Avobenzone

The third ingredient is present in every screen I have come across

I have never heard of this, but you do burn more easily when I pregnant , as I discovered on an overcast day ...
so be careful .

Hope90x · 16/03/2022 12:58

Thank you all for your comments, this is really reassuring.
I too am weary of avoiding the rabbit holes but unfortunately found myself down this one whilst worrying about whether I should be going on holiday at all whilst pregnant (approx 18weeks)

Large hat and a floaty cover up will sort you. Or alternatively buy some child friendly sunscreen.

Hope90x · 16/03/2022 13:01

And thank you for the suggestions re Nivea. This is a brand I would typically use anyway.

I just wanted to make sure this was not another one of these things I am totally clueless about.

I read this too. I will have to be extra careful as I am prone to burning anyway.

Good suggestions here, big hat already purchased and on the hunt for a couple of pretty but practical cover ups! Thank you

It's best to choose a mineral/physical sunscreen instead of a chemical one. They use mineral-based ingredients, like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, to block UV rays and don't get absorbed into the skin.

My favourite one is La Roche-Posay anthelios (spf 50+)

Cakecakecheese · 16/03/2022 13:08

Have a look at Green People they use a lot less chemicals than other brands if you're worried about that

Farmageddon · 02/12/2022 22:13

Just use mineral rather than chemical if you are worried.
