Will I get food poisoning after tonight’s dinner?

I just ate a stir fry containing:

  • Chicken that was 2 days past use by date
  • Egg noodles that were 3 days past use by
  • A pack of pre-prepared stir fry veg (including bean sprouts) that were 3 days past use by

All 3 were in sealed packets in the fridge and opened this evening.

What is the likelihood I will get food poisoning from this?

How do you expect anyone to know? If it looked, smelt, and tasted ok you're probably fine.

ClandestineAdulation · 15/03/2022 22:27

You’ll probably be fine.

Did the bean sprouts look and smell ok? And the chicken after it was opened?

Think egg noodles are relatively low risk.

TheFlis12345 · 15/03/2022 22:29

The biggest risk would have been the chicken and you can smell a mile away when that is off.

Beamur · 15/03/2022 22:30

Have you toilet paper supplies, just in case ..?.

Workinghardeveryday · 15/03/2022 22:31

Sorry to ask, but why eat it in the first place?

RenegadeMasterx · 15/03/2022 22:31

If you were worried why did you risk it?

DramaAlpaca · 15/03/2022 22:33

That's a fairly regular occurrence in our house when we lose the run of what's in the fridge. We've never been ill, we've stomachs of steel.

In short, you'll be fine. Almost certainly.

GeorgiePorge · 15/03/2022 22:33

very little if the chicken had been kept in the fridge.

Off chicken stinks.
Noodles go mouldy
Veg goes slimey (slimy?) and really stinks

Anomalocaris · 15/03/2022 22:34

You'd know if the chicken was off, egg noodles have a fairly long lifespan so they wouldn't worry me, the most risky thing was probably the beansprouts. But nobody here can know, only time will tell!

ReadyToMoveIt · 15/03/2022 22:36

If it all smelt ok it was probably fine.

DockOTheBay · 15/03/2022 22:37

If the chicken smells OK you're fine.

Vegetables wouldn't give you food poisoning, they might just not taste as good or be a bit slimy. Egg noodles are ambient dry produce so it will be a best before rather than sale by so no problem there.

Flowersandhearts · 15/03/2022 22:38

Probably/hopefully not! How come all of the out of date food?

bonfireheart · 15/03/2022 22:39

I eat all sorts and don't get sick. Maybe cos one year I got awful food poisoning and then spent weeks in hospital and years on medication that my body can now cope with anything!!

LakeIsle48 · 15/03/2022 22:39

I recently ate boiled eggs that were 3 days out of date and I was violently sick. I took a risk but it did not go well at all.

circles76 · 15/03/2022 22:40

The egg noodles were the fresh variety and had a use by date, not best before. The chicken looked and smelt fine. It’s the veg I’m most worried about as I know beansprouts can be risky.

Sorry to ask, but why eat it in the first place?

I’m absolutely skint and couldn’t bear to waste it!

If it all looked and smelled fine, then it's fine.

People get much too legalistic about dates on food. There's no magic moment when it becomes poisonous - food makes you ill when it starts to go rotten. You can tell when food is rotten!

nonono1 · 15/03/2022 22:41

@LakeIsle48 Did you do the float test before cooking?

Nnique · 15/03/2022 22:42

It’s highly unlikely that you’ll have any issues.

I’ve used chicken a couple of days past the date more than a few times - you can tell if it’s rotten by sight/smell.

Egg noodles, no problem for me, I’d definitely have used them. Beansprouts no problem. Seriously vegetables don’t suddenly go from fine to not fine - as long as they’re not rotten they’re okay to eat.

Nnique · 15/03/2022 22:43

The eggs will likely have been contaminated somehow. You don’t get violently ill from 3 day overdue eggs - they keep for months.

LoudingVoice · 15/03/2022 22:44

You’ll be absolutely fine.

I never look at dates on anything, it’s quite obvious if something is off.

Nnique · 15/03/2022 22:45

The float check is for freshness, it doesn’t determine if they’re safe to eat or not. An older egg is still fine to eat. Again, if it’s rotten it’s unmistakable.

musicviking1 · 15/03/2022 22:57

I will always eat veg that's way gone out of date, but the repacked salad stuff worries me so that gets binned.

circles76 · 16/03/2022 06:42

Update: I woke up this morning feeling fine! I do need to get more efficient with my meal planning in future though.

knittingaddict · 16/03/2022 06:43

If you have a efficient working fridge, probably zero chance of food poisoning

knittingaddict · 16/03/2022 06:50

I eat eggs past their date all the time and have never been ill. I don't keep them in the fridge either.

I wouldn't hesitate to use out of date vegetables. You can easily see if they are past their best and I certainly wouldn't waste perfectly edible food.
