Or is selling Ukrainian ribbons for profit dreadful

I was just looking to buy one, assuming proceeds (like with poppies) would go to humanitarian support for Ukraine. I’ve already donated to the Red Cross but want to visibly show my solidarity.

Instead what I found was a Chinese based seller selling them for profit. Probably not the only one. I couldn’t face looking any further.

I find it distasteful at best - China have refused to condemn the invasion. Now they are making profit from it.

AIBU or should Amazon and Etsy stop people making a profit on the back of a war?

Can I suggest supportpins.co.uk/?

British, and all profits going directly to UNICEF.

You seem to be equating a government's foreign policy stance with one individual selling items on a website....

Comes across very nasty OP

I can guarantee sellers from elsewhere in the world are doing it

Nicholethejewellery · 15/03/2022 14:38

YANBU to not buy from the Chinese sellers but YABU to expect anyone selling on Amazon or Etsy to be there for any other reason than profit.

People will look for a quick buck wherever they can, war and human tragedy are not things that dissuade some people from seeing an opportunity to make money.

Upamountain43 · 15/03/2022 14:45

If I am being honest I'm way more angry at the arms manufacturers and others such as them who make a living out of war rather than an individual making a bit of money from selling ribbons.

HollowedOut · 15/03/2022 14:49

It’s one individual seller flogging ribbons, surely, rather than the Chinese government?

Of course it’s a shitty thing to do and of course there will be someone out there doing it for a profit. Just donate to a relevant charity if you want to help, OP. I think it’s pretty much taken as given that everyone other than those with very unconventional views condemn the invasion. Wearing a ribbon seems very virtue signally to me.

BloodyN0rah · 15/03/2022 14:51

Some people are more interested in virtue signalling than actually helping so I guess that’s their market. I have a friend crafting yellow and blue teddy bears with profits going to Ukraine charities - I don’t understand why people can’t just donate without having a teddy to show for it 🤷🏻‍♀️

londonmummy1966 · 15/03/2022 14:58

I've been making them and am happy to send one to anyone who DMs me with their address free of charge but feel free to make a donation to DEC/Red Cross etc.

Mossstitch · 15/03/2022 15:37

@BloodyN0rah exactly! Even the UK link one says 'all profits' meaning money is taken out for admin and the cost of the badges so you can guarantee that someone is making money from it😤

Hont1986 · 15/03/2022 16:12

"they" are making profit on it, are they? Hmm

Why on earth would you need to 'visibly show your solidarity'?

Copenhagenoffice · 15/03/2022 16:16

They are surely allowed to cover their costs aren't they though?

I did consider whether I would be virtue signalling to be honest but having spoken to a Ukrainian recently they fed back that knowing that people are supporting them and in solidarity with them does help. So my thinking was that wearing a ribbon means that any Ukrainian passing me in the street knows that I’m thinking of them, their friends and family and Ukraine in general and hopefully feel a little bit of human connection in a tragic situation. Also I have donated already so it’s not as though this will mean less of a donation. I’d be doing this as extra. Thanks for the link above and the PM Londonmummy.

@Annoyedtoomuch
Sorry, I wasn’t having a go at anyone for wearing one, I think it’s great that people want to help and show support, I’m just a bit tired of some of the stuff I’m seeing on Facebook that seems to be more about the individual IYKWIM

XenoBitch · 15/03/2022 19:32

If people will buy these things, then people will keep making them and getting a profit from them.

Countless people made masks during the pandemic... a lot for profit too. Should that have not been allowed?

Annoyedtoomuch · 15/03/2022 20:57

A mask was a functional necessity? Confused
