Alcohol making me ill?

Hi I'm 36 and never really feel great.
I'm starting to think it's dehydration.
I don't drink much at all
Breakfast half a cup of tea
Then rest of the day il sip on a Diet Coke and after 6 hours there will still be some left.
Then maybe 1/2 bottle of 500 ml water

I wake up exhausted,I'm always tired
Really sticky mouth but the worst is a headache on the top of my head and going lightheaded occasionally.
Also I will drink twice a week (5 cocktails a night )

Aibu to think it's my lack of drinking (I just struggle to drink more )
Or is that enough ?

If you feel anxious drinking around others and using a straw makes you feel more comfortable then I would build on that and just sip more often to make your consumption increase so no major changes to make your anxiety worse. Hopefully you will feel the benefit of drinking more when you feel comfortable and that will motivate you to increase your intake all the time

nearlyspringyay · 15/03/2022 13:33

If you can drink five cocktails you must be able to drink water? It's not the alcohol making you but the lack of hydration!. But maybe lay of sugary cocktails and have a g and t instead.

humblesims · 15/03/2022 13:37

Start by drinking a good amount of water at home morning and evening. Use weak dilute squash if you want. And just sip on water at work instead of fizzy drink. It's strange to start with, like anything, but you will feel MUCH better.

DogInATent · 15/03/2022 13:43

You're drinking double the recommended weekly intake for alcohol, and binge drinking. If you're ill, it's because you're overdoing it.

Cut down the alcohol and drink more water.

Justcallmebebes · 15/03/2022 14:00

I too drink loads of water, a couple of cups of tea a day but no fizzy drinks at all. If you increase your fluid intake you will feel heaps better and your skin will improve no end, as should the bloating.

Such a small undertaking for a huge return

rayoflightand · 15/03/2022 14:02

I've so far drank a 500ml of water today and I can notice my headache easing off ever so slightly
I was so fed up of waking up every day feeling more tired than when I went to bed.

See if you can go somewhere where you feel comfortable to drink fluids on your breaks at work and ensure you use them to have a break. Even if you have to go out of the workplace to feel comfortable enough. You should be able to drink enough within the comfort breaks which are required by law in the uk.

hihellohihello · 15/03/2022 14:14

And cut the alcohol. It will dehydrate you further. Alternate with 'mocktails' non alcoholic drink / drink slower. 5 is quite a lot to get through in one evening. Maybe look at drinks that are not as speedily quaffable - if you like them. For alcoholic drinks choose the ones you like you know you will drink more slowly.

I try to get around 3 litres of water each day and I also have a two cups of tea.

rayoflightand · 15/03/2022 14:45

Can you all notice a difference ?
When you aren't drinking as much ?

There is a sort of therapy called Somatic Experiencing that works quickly and is really great for things like this, when a bad experience in the past is limiting you now. X

ive got a coke habit(the soft drink not the drug)
i dont drink tea, coffee or alcohol.

but i do drink a LOT of milk, im talking 8-12 pints of full fat blue top a day, i need milk for my severe GERD as that's the only thing that helps the acid.

i was way to much on full fat coke, a good 7-9 a day, some days more. this have been going on for years im talking 30 odd years(im 41)

the price have jumped up considerably so i decided last week to give them up.

the side effects have been horrendous. the cokes were 77 sugar cubes a day and i cant even calculate the milk.
but i never had the symptoms you are describing of dehydration as the milk and coke must have been good enough.

im having side effects because of the sugar and caffeine withdrawals

im on water now and milk, i googled my size and it tells you how roughly much water you should be drinking for your size.

im a big girl as im 6ft and 15st 7(used to be 18 and half)and the calculator said 15-17 cups a day or 3.5-4 litres

way more above the recommended 5-6 glasses

theres loads of lovely bottles out there you can buy and some hold a lot of liquid or get a metal or silicone straw to sip on all day.

have a google on dehydration (if you haven't already)and what it does to the body.

iv done this on coke and withdrawal symptoms in the last few days.

odd question but whats your pee colour?
theres a chart on google saying the different colours and what they mean, pale straw id best.
if its water clear your too hydrated and that has problems as well.

WTAF?

you need to see a doctor not drink 12 pints of milk a day!

sunlovingcriminal · 15/03/2022 15:02

@TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY that is an extreme amount of milk! I'm not sure how you can actually drink so much!! Does that also not leave you feeling incredibly full as milk is filling?!!

Mossstitch · 15/03/2022 15:14

I find if I'm dehydrated (happens if at work on hot hospital ward and not had enough to drink all day) then drink wine that night then the next day I feel awful, exhausted, headache and nauseous. Its not the alcohol as such it's that alcohol dehydrates you and in your already dehydrated state it is giving you a hangover. If you are hydrated before hand then you should be alright with your cocktails. I've reached the conclusion I need to not drink after work only on days off😕If you do feel rough lucozade helps or full sugar coke with paracetamol, the caffeine in the drink makes it work faster (not sure I should be giving advice on how to handle a hangover 🤔🤣but afraid I'm guilty of not drinking enough on a work day too although not for the same reason) 🍻

Is this a wind up?! How could anyone possibly drink that much milk a day - that's quite impressive. At those volumes it is probably worthwhile investing in a dairy cow
ThinWomansBrain · 15/03/2022 16:24

@rayoflightand

I have anxiety and I know this will sound silly but when I'm at work I'm scared to drink incase I choke
straw, paper umbrella, maybe even add some orange squash - pretend it's a cocktail
Theonewiththecandles · 16/03/2022 20:05

You must be so dehydrated!
Yes I can tell the difference when I haven't had as much water. I have a 700ml water bottle, and try to drink 3 a day so 2.1litres of water only (used to be squash) plus 2 coffees and a herbal tea on a night so over 3 litres of fluid a day I imagine
