Free from items shouldn’t be replaced on shopping

We get a weekly home delivery from a major supermarket. We order free from items because there are allergies in the house, as well as coeliac disease. Last week our Birdseye Free from fishfingers were replaced on the weekly shop by home brand free from fishfingers. It was said hurriedly at the door and we said that’s fine. I’ve been SO ill this week, just happened to be looking at the packet and realised the fishfingers are Free From FISH! So they’re vegan fishfingers, not gluten free. AIBU to think that supermarkets should not be just substituting free from items with any other substitutes?? I just think it’s so bloody irresponsible. Yes I accept fully that I should’ve checked it and not trusted the word of the driver who probably didn’t know the difference anyway - lesson learnt. It’s the way it’s called Free From, it’s a range that’s usually fine and now it seems to just be free from anything at all. You’d think there’d be some sort of check?? If someone orders a product without an allergen in it (gluten or milk or nuts or whatever it is) then don’t send them a replacement with that one just say sorry we don’t have the item or anything similar.

I wonder how thorough they shop anyway. I ordered a click and collect shop at sainsburys. I wanted currants for a cake I received an email at 9am saying currants our of stock.Went to collect it at 10am and popped into shop too for other bits, there was a shelf full of currants! Doubt it had just been restocked.

Theunamedcat · 14/03/2022 21:39

They don't get it I had a picker override the reccomend substitution gluten free bread and replace it with linseed bread which is wheat bread with added linseed I felt guilty getting them into trouble but ffs it clearly states GLUTEN FREE ONLY in my subs box and they overrode the system to give me an improper sub the driver was pissed at me constantly sending things back

LimeSupper · 14/03/2022 21:39

@UghFletcher that’s even worse then - if there’s a computer system there should be an easy way to ensure it doesn’t select an item that contains gluten if you’ve ordered a gluten free item. Especially one called “free from”. Call it something by else?? Call it vegan if that’s what it is??

YANBU - free from shopping is becoming really hard. All the gluten free stuff is getting stored next to all the vegan stuff (which is always full of wheat) with the same branding

They should be separate or branded differently.

Yes, you should check but that's a crap substitution. I like sainsburys as you can see what they've subbed with (it's usually not that great) so you can reject at the door.

MartinMartinMarti · 14/03/2022 21:39

We have specific dietary needs, and I’ve always been able to add a general note to my orders to make sure we don’t get subs we can’t use.

For products that are likely to get subbed for products we can’t use, I choose to have no subs at all.

And then of course you get told at or before drop off that there are subs.

What else do you want the supermarkets to do OP?

Finally, I always, always check if it’s not a product I’m not familiar with.

AHungryCaterpillar · 14/03/2022 21:40

Just click no substitutes it’s not hard

hunder · 14/03/2022 21:41

Last week my GF self raising four was replaced with GF beer. DH was home when they delivered and happily accepted the substitution. I'm still trying to work out how I could replace flour with beer in a recipe!

Hankunamatata · 14/03/2022 21:42

You can request to not have substitutions when ordering

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 14/03/2022 21:45

I'm guessing the people saying you should check dont actually have food allergies and understand how relentless it is to have to check every single thing every single time you eat. When you order gluten free it should be gluten free or nothing!! Hope you feel better soon. 💐

BooksAndHooks · 14/03/2022 21:48

@dudsville

I agree. I think it's a hard task, I wish they'd allow us to comment about suitable replacements. I ordered a posh vegetarian mac and cheese and was offered one with pancetta instead. Same thing happened with a pizza.
I can do this on Tescos you can add notes to any items including what substitutes you’ll accept.
AtomicBlondeRose · 14/03/2022 21:52

I agree that they can’t possibly know why you bought a particular product - the Free From ones were gluten free but maybe you choose them because they don’t contain soya or whatever. Same with the vegetarian Mac and cheese - it’s usually vegetarian so it doesn’t mean you bought it specifically for that reason. Plenty of biscuits are vegan by accident - some vegans might buy them but a picker wouldn’t know which other brands also happen to be vegan or that it was important. I just don’t think they can possibly please everyone, what seems like common sense to one person is a stupid choice to the next.

@Bogiesaremyonlyfriend it's so relentless, yet the OP didn't check the item when it was put away or brought back out to cook?

My nephew has a severe peanut allergy (amongst other allergies) and his parents are constantly checking food packaging, especially if it's a different brand than they usually buy. Surely that is common sense when you have allergies?

LimeSupper · 14/03/2022 21:54

@MsSquiz well it isn’t a different brand, I’ve used Free From for years, it’s a safe brand for me. Now they’re changing my it to include vegan products - it wasn’t clear to me.

Orders in my Sainsbury’s are picked from 2am but emails aren’t sent at this time. There’s a high chance your order was picked prior to the night staff filling the shelf.

Substitutions can be difficult. You never know (unless there’s a picking note) what element of the order is important to someone. It can be the brand, pack size or flavour. You can only use your own judgement and sometimes that will be wrong. In OP’s case it doesn’t sound a great sub but not everyone who buys gluten free is doing so because of allergies.

LimeSupper · 14/03/2022 21:54

@Bogiesaremyonlyfriend thank you!

Yep, on at least 3 occasions in the past couple of months I've found regular nairns oatcakes on the free from shelf where the gf nairns oatcakes should be. The free from freezer section is now full of vegan food, hardly any gf stuff.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 14/03/2022 21:56

Coeliac here and I generally only allow subs on things where it's extremely unlikely it would be subbed with anything gluteny — things like eggs or carrots. If I'm using a supermarket that allows comments with each item, I'll allow subs on GF bread and comment "gluten-free only please", because gluten-free bread will say so in big letters, and probably be in a different section anyway. I specify it because it's entirely possible that there are people out there who would prefer a gluteny loaf if there are no GF loaves, whereas I'd obviously rather have literally any GF bread product.

Anything else, I'm not going to expect the picker to have the time or the experience to carefully read labels for me.

Having said that, I'd have possibly made the same mistake you did with the fish fingers in assuming that the free-from sub was going to be suitable, but that's only because as coeliacs we're used to having almost the whole free-from range cater to us.

I've made plenty of mistakes with online shopping too — I accidentally left subs turned on for some crisps, and rather than subbing a different flavour of own brand or subbing Seabrooks or Kettle Chips, which I would've done if I'd been in store myself, they gave me Walkers, which I'm betting 95% of customers would've been very happy with. But I wouldn't usually even ask for subs on crisps even if I could specify GF per item, because it would involve the picker reading the backs of packets, which I don't think they have time for.

DP and I are both CEV so have had to spend long periods of time living off supermarket deliveries, and it's a real pain when you have dietary requirements. Frequently stuff turns up which gave no indication on the web listing that it had The Forbidden Ingredients, but when it gets here and I scour the label it's been reformulated to contain wheat (happened with a meat paste) or has a previously unmentioned May Contain warning, and nobody's got time at the door to read every label.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 14/03/2022 21:56

YABVU for 2 reasons.

  1. check the substitution yourself and read the packet! I'm vegan and anyone who takes our online shop in always double checks the subs. If we accept them in a rush I check them later.

  2. I think you made up the 'free from' fish fingers being free from fish to cover you own stupidity. Because i cannot find any product online from a well known supermarket that is vegan and called free from fish fingers. There are vegan fish fingers, yes. But none are in the free from range. Please share the actual product.

InkySquid · 14/03/2022 21:58

But in that instance - let’s say you ordered a gluten free lemon cake. How does the picker know it’s gluten free you’re after and not lemon?

I can't believe anyone would order a gluten free lemon cake over a lemon cake were the gluten free aspect not important! Maybe there are some people who enjoy paying twice the price for something half the size for no good reason

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 14/03/2022 22:00

Free From that wasn't free from gluten?? Really? That's crap if it happened.

I'd be interested to know what supermarket, to avoid it.

LimeSupper · 14/03/2022 22:04

To those asking about the product, they’re called Fish Free Fingers from Tesco. I was told at the door they were “ our home brand free from fishfingers” and I didn’t notice, with the chaos of checking all the items. I’m not sure why I didn’t notice, I just didn’t. I do accept I bear responsibility for that obviously- but I also think the supermarket should be crystal clear on branding items with allergens etc and pointing things out. I ordered gluten free shopping, I think it should be pointed out you’re throwing in an unsuitable item if that makes sense?

It's hard when large amounts of stuff is unavailable and you have to create meals somehow.
icedancerlenny · 14/03/2022 22:09

People without allergies don’t understand how important this is. And it annoys me when people comment on something vegetarian being substituted for something with meat it. That won’t kill you. This mistake could.

My daughter has a life threatening milk allergy and has had things substituted with milk in. I do check everything that’s delivered again but it’s easy to miss something at that point.

I agree with you.

If you ordered 'Free From' then that wasn't an equivalent substitute.

And yes when the delivery person is putting crates on your doorstep and rattling off words and handing you the invoice and you have to transfer it to bags and maybe there are other things going on then no you don't have time to read the small print on a packet of fishfingers.

However, lesson learned that a lot of vegan stuff is riddled with gluten.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 14/03/2022 22:16

I use Asda as we’re all coeliacs, vegetarian and have allergies too so life it fun!

I always untick every single box for substitutes. In the information box it informs the picker we’re coeliac, vegetarian and have allergies

Regularly get substitutes Hmm what else can I do? At least Asda refund without quibble if they slip one through

We get an email so I know what’s coming or not and I always screenshot changes for DH if I’m not there so he should refuse them but he’s autistic and sometimes forgets. I just request a refund but it is irritating
