Bought my first car yesterday aged 48 after passing my test at 36 but not driving since bar refresher driving lessons in October last year. Best decision I have ever made.

@Yukkatree12 that's the app I'm using I'm consistently getting 94% on the theory part. The hazard perception is a little more difficult. Is it the same questions as the app??

Lesson 2 done managed to change into second gear and turn off into another road so I'm getting there slowly and steady

My aunt passed at 50 something after my uncle died. She is still driving at 87 and is an excellent driver. She says because she started later, she hasn't lost her confidence as she has got older.

Of course you're not too old. You're in the prime of life.

Nowomenaroundeh · 29/03/2022 12:29

No way. I started when I was 40 and pregnant. My only advice is to straight for an automatic.

zingally · 29/03/2022 13:06

Go for it! I have 2 friends who did it in their early 40s!

In my experience, no one really likes the process of learning to drive, but once you can do it... amazing. In 5 years you'll look back and realise it's changed your life.

@Lolly34h the questions are worded differently but they are kind of the same if that makes sense? If you are getting that score consistently then you should be ok! (I was getting above 90% consistently too)

The hazard perception keep practicing it, the videos I had on the test were the same layout as the CGI ones but different scenarios so don’t let that confuse you. However, I found it easier in the test than the mock tests on the app.

In the test I scored 46 in the theory and 65 in hazard perception.

No! never to old

Passed when I was coming up 30.

Tears, useless instructors who told me to quit or insisted I go automatic when they latched onto my anxiety and because I wasn't 17. Think I was learning for about 4 years on and off just due to affordability and I don't think I ever really found a supportive instructor but I now have friends who do this role and I'm blown away by all the volume of people they have the ability to get past so quite possibly it is a lot better mind-wise than 10-15 years back.

I'm glad I didn't listen to the instructors of my time (most of them, if not all I note aren't around today in this profession)

Me
I've not caused an accident in just over 10 years on and have prevented a few now all in a manual car. Scared at first it was a good year before I'd venture more than just going back and forth to workplace or visit parents house at that time in all honesty but I love it. It really opened doors.

One of my Auntie's was rocking 50 as well when passed.

Not at all too late! Make sure your instructor is the very best around. I had been with two instructors as a young un, who I can see now in retrospect after experiencing a good instructor, were dreadful! Also, failing first time is super common. If it happens, don't let it knock you and get your next one booked that same day! My SIL passed her test on her 6th attempt. She's an excellent driver now. That won't happen to you though - you'll get it first time. Smile

I passed my test last August at 37. 1 month before I turned 38. First time with 6 minor faults. I’d had a couple of lessons in my 20s but was too nervous. However 2 kids later I did it. It’s made life easier with work and school activities. Though I did really scrape the car the first time I put it on the drive Blush

My instructor was recommended to me by my best friends Mum. She learnt to drive in her 60s. He’s currently teaching a fellow school Mum also in her 30s. Have you had anyone recommended to you locally? Can you say where you are roughly in case anyone can give you a recommendation? I’m in Cardiff if thats any good to you?
