To be reluctant to send my driving licence off?

I need to update my details on my driving licence as I recently got married, but AIBU to be reluctant to do this? Last time I needed a replacement it took around eight months to come back …

Took about 3 days last month to get a new photo card updated with new address. Opted for a full renewal as less than 6 months left on old photo card

I didnt send my old one back until the new one arrived.

The DVLA told Driving.co.uk that even if someone adopts their partner’s surname, or double-barrels the two surnames, in social situations, there is no obligation to update their driving licence; he or she may still use their previous name. A car’s V5C registration certificate that includes the previous name will remain valid, too.

However, if someone changes their name by deed poll, which is a legal change, then they must also update their driving licence, along with other documents such as your passport.

Similarly, if someone changes their gender legally then they must also update their driving licence, and the same goes for changing address — the DVLA must be made aware as soon as you move house.

My issue is more that they want the original marriage certificate as evidence? I’m not sending that in the post!

@M0RVEN

Or you can just keep your own name and save all this time and money Hmm.
Or you could respect someone's wishes to change her name to her husband's 🙄

@girlmom21

Surely you've got other ID? Bank statements, council tax bills, passports?
You need driving licence or passport. I Don’t have a passport in my new name either yet, and similar problems with that!

Your passport and drivers license still work as ID even after you are married.

LondonQueen · 14/03/2022 17:36

I never sent mine back, when they asked for it back I just didn't send it.

Burgerqueenbee · 14/03/2022 17:54

For a name change you do have to send off the licence with the form, you send it off at your leisure for a change of address.
It took me 3 years to get around to changing it, and it took 5 months to come through but that was last year when there was a big backlog.

Ugh god people are being painful on this post.

Yes OP can keep her maiden name - she doesn't bloody want to. That's not what she posted for!

To have bank cards etc in your name you normally have to have a few forms of ID with your new name on first!! It's a catch-22.

I remember when I had to do all this OP and it drove me mad as certain documents had to be updated with my new name before I could change anything else. I also hated having to send off my original marriage certificate. I made sure I sent it tracked with a pre-paid envelope for tracked postage back and it came back fine.

From what I can remember it didn't take long at all to get my new ID back, maybe a week? I can't remember if it was just before covid or during though.

girlmom21 · 14/03/2022 19:42

@Caramelandcoco yeah but for jobs you're not considering applying for 🙈 I'd send one off at a time!

Peasock · 14/03/2022 19:43

I didn't send mine off for my name change, it just said to cut it up when the new one arrived!

MintyFreshBreath · 14/03/2022 20:33

My mum and my husband put theirs in the same envelope. DH got his back in two weeks. My mum’s was missing for two months. Weird.
