GP …what would your surgery do?

I had an US on my abdomen. I’ve just had a call from my surgery to say to book myself an appointment to discuss the results of the US by phoning at 8am tomorrow morning. They’re sorry but can’t book me a routine appointment!

AIBU unreasonable to think it would be just easier for them to book me in? Bearing in mind I have no control over the routine telephone conversation/appointment anyway? They never give times you get a slot and you have to keep an eye on your phone:

Also now I’m bricking it as what could the result mean?!

It would suggest to me that the results are fine, otherwise I would expect them to book you in with a face to face appointment.

They wouldn't ask someone to make an appointment if the results were fine.

It's ridiculous that they've called you, but then you've got to call back to make an appointment, when someone will call you again.

It could be that the Radiology Consultant suggests a different test or bloods as the US didn't show up what could be wrong with you.

girlmom21 · 14/03/2022 16:09

This is quite common at the moment and it's bollocks. Phone and make the appointment then make a complaint to your CQC.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 14/03/2022 16:10

I would hope that my surgery would book me an appt as they had already made a call to me.

Running the 8am gauntlet is nigh on impossible if you have kids to get to school, so usually by the time I manage to get through all of the day’s appointments have gone. Hopefully you’ll have better luck then me op x

Goldenbunny · 14/03/2022 16:15

I had some tests a few months back the results was abnormal and I got a call from the gp I didn't need to make an appointment.
Dd had some bloods taken and they wanted to start her some medication again I never made an appointment they just called me with the results.

Some surgeries aren't booking ahead due to the unpredictable nature of staff sickness at the moment. Cancelling lots of appointments is time consuming, annoying and frustrating (for pt and staff). Try not to worry if they just want a routine appointment. Also they aren't supposed to book too many in advance as they need to have X amount of appointments available on the day, so it might be that the next pre bookable one is a few weeks out. The whole system is so stretched, it's hard for all concerned, patients and staff.

Yes just now thinking you called me to tell me to book a routine appointment. I’m still having the bother in my abdomen (I don’t have a gall bladder so it can’t be that? But now I’m thinking what could it be?

Yes as PP said they’ve called me to tell me to book an appointment!

Thanks @Spaghettipie1 that makes sense.

Also would the US person say on the day if something was wrong?

Something that needed urgent attention they would book an urgent appointment, they'd use an "on the day" slot in advance for that (where I am) and just call you and book it over the phone. I hope you get to talk to someone soon x

YouShouldGoAndLoveYourself · 14/03/2022 21:48

If they book ahead then where does it stop?

All surgeries have some variations. Some have been only book on the day for many years.

The person who did the US scan would most likely be a radiographer, trained to take images but not to interpret them. The person who interprets the image is a Radiologist, they are a doctor and trained to look at and interpret the image and make recommendations about further images/test required.

So 8am came and went in the manic ness of the morning. I’ll try again tomorrow.
