a face book post,
person asking for £500 car to be used to drive children to and from school for a couple for weeks while main car is in the garage?

goodness,
so many people, myself for a start, use a £500 car for years, they are not cheap commodities to be discarded after a couple of weeks, at this money,
should i ask to have the car when she has finished with it?
i have sat on my hands and will not respond but give me some good responses should i rise to it

Never unreasonable to feel annoyed if that's what you feel!

ohhooh · 14/03/2022 09:19

Why would you "rise to it"?

Isn't someone just asking for help finding a cheap car to use for a few weeks, whilst their vehicle is unavailable? I doubt they'll be discarding it after a few weeks, it'll probably get sold on to someone else.

I'm not sure what the fact about people having a £500 car for years brings to the conversation 🤷🏻‍♀️

MrsVoorhees · 14/03/2022 09:22

Yes, be annoyed by whatever you want.

I don't think it's annoying though. There wouldn't be any £500 cars if other people weren't buying them new. It's always been that come people buy a car new and have it for two years and sell it and on it goes. We all have our own thoughts on when to replace a car.

My dh travels an hour to work and I work in a different place pretty much every day. We couldn't not go to work for two weeks if we didn't have a car. It would cost dh more than £500 for the fortnight to go on the train.

NoSquirrels · 14/03/2022 09:25

Would it have been better if they’d said “I need a car for free while my car’s in the garage”?

Genuinely - what would be a reasonable post on FB for their issue of getting kids to school for 2 weeks?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/03/2022 09:26

yes no squirrels
it would be better if they hadnt stipulated the amount

that is all

YABU and oversensitive because of your own financial situation.

They haven’t done anything wrong.

ImAvingOops · 14/03/2022 09:30

I don't get why this is annoying - of course they should specify how much they can afford to spend.
If they buy a £500 car, then someone who needs to sell one is going to get money they need.
People ^are* allowed to have more money than you and spend it as they see fit.

BertieQueen · 14/03/2022 09:30

Yabu. They have posted asking for a car for £500 that they need for a couple of weeks. After that they might sell it on or give it to a relative/friend who needs a car. You do not have the full picture from one Facebook post!

You don’t have a car for sale so it’s nothing to do with you.Just scroll on…

TheVolturi · 14/03/2022 09:30

Could probably hire a car for that.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/03/2022 09:32

yes of course, you are right, i am indeed over sensitive
and daft tbh Smile

@TheVolturi

Could probably hire a car for that.
But this way they have a car to sell again at the end.
Sockpile · 14/03/2022 09:33

YABU. Perhaps it’s cheaper than taxis/public transport/hiring a car and they know they can sell the car after to get their money back. Perhaps they only have £500 spare so the budget is important.

BankingOnChange · 14/03/2022 09:40

You're being silly op.

We too have one £500 car that has so far lasted us 18 months and is in pretty good condition...does the job from a to b. I'm by no means a car snob! If or when it does, we'll probably replace it with a similarly aged model as a cheap run around.

However we also have one £6k car...and if that was out of action I can imagine myself phrasing similarly that we needed a £500 car to see us through for several weeks.

It doesn't mean I'd then chuck the car in the bin! I'd sell it on once we had no further need for it.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 14/03/2022 09:42

YABU

They believe they need a car and it is probably cheaper than taxis or a rental. Plus, they have something to sell at the end.

Smart move, I think.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 14/03/2022 09:45

should i ask to have the car when she has finished with it?

For £500?

Findingneeemo · 14/03/2022 09:48

It may be that they will buy it and use for 2/3 weeks then sell it to someone else. Or maybe they have a family member who is learning to drive that they will pass it on to as hiring/taxis would be a similar amount and this is more cost effective.

Ariela · 14/03/2022 09:54

£500 is probably her budget of available cash. She can re-sell it for £500 or so after use.
Don't understand the problem.

Daddydog · 14/03/2022 09:55

I don't understand? A £500 car with a couple of weeks worth of miles on it is still worth £500 at the other end when you sell it. It's basically free motoring! Currently have a £500 runabout on our driveway as partners car has been stuck in the garage for 6 weeks due supply chain issues/shortages. They thought it would be a max of 2 weeks too.
