does it make the garage damp? I can't dry my clothes inside on a clothes horse because the house gets damp. Any tips please?

If the ground is dry I hang our laundry out. It takes longer but I've been doing this since February. To dry inside I need warm air.

i have a clothes horse in my shed, its a bit damp in the shed, as need the roof felt done again as it leaks in a parts,, but things like this don't bother me.

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

I think the problem with a clothes horse is there is insufficient air circulation.

What one needs is a giant clothes hedgehog. The spines will support the clothes and allow much more air flow.

I have taken the liberty of reviewing the offerings at Argos, Lidl and John Lewis but sadly they don't appear to have any quite like thar at the moment.

What is a clothes hedgehog?

I had a big drying cupboard built next to the boiler. When the weather isn’t fit for drying outside, I hang everything in the drying cupboard. I can fit three loads in there and it’s so warm that the clothes dry overnight.

A clothes hedgehog?

I don't really know but I may just have invented something.

I didn't realise that there would be a demand...Wink

Two clothes horse in a small living room! No problems with damp, always keep my house airy and fresh. Have a condenser tumble dryer which I only use for towels.

Roxy69 · 15/03/2022 22:34

Outside on a line - just like people used to do in the olden days. Otherwise or as well as, on hanger things over the radiators. No signs of damp and I do ventilate rooms by opening windows for a little while.

bemusedmoose · 16/03/2022 14:07

it will make the clothes smell odd i would think I put my clothes horse up in the bath and dry the clothes there always dry before the bath is needed. Not had trouble with the house being damp but i do air my house a lot

Mirw · 16/03/2022 14:23

I dry my washing on a pulley in the bathroom. House doesn't get damp and it's the only window that opens in our flat!

Ksb6 · 16/03/2022 14:42

We had a building surveyor tell us to NEVER hang clothes inside, humidifier or not! The amount of water coming off wet washing is not good for the joists and timbers in our old house. Look at how much water you are emptying in a condenser dryer. So I put it in the conservatory or carport, or use the condenser dryer. I can't wait for warmer weather when it can dry properly outside!

Foxylass · 16/03/2022 17:39

Yes, as long as there is a through wind, breeze or similar.
I have a creel (pulley airer) in my long porch and if the door is open, allowing a breeze, everything dries well.....it usually takes 2 days in winter though.
If the door remains closed, my laundry starts to smell before it dries.
A clothes horse would get in my way and they fall over.

Sgtmajormummy · 16/03/2022 17:56

I had a drying setup in the (well-ventilated) garage of the last place we lived in. We used the garage as storage so no car fumes etc.

I had a ceiling mounted pulley airer which caught all the rising warm air from the chest freezer below. I just hung up the stuff there, out of sight, out of mind, until I needed to hang out a new load. I did have a clothes horse in the garage for the few times the previous load was still damp.

Bulky damp clothes horses in the house get on my nerves.

A c’è

@Sparklynewname

My dryer broke just before Christmas so I have been managing without since then. We have dehumidifiers upstairs and downstairs but I only hang the washing on an airer downstairs or on radiators if I have masses. I have become obsessive about washing and watching the weather so I can hang stuff on the line. I try to do a wash load each day and hang it on the airer overnight and it’s usually dry within 24 hours but DH complains about always having washing hanging around.

I have whirligig washing line and always used to hang washing from the inside working outwards but a couple of weeks ago I saw someone on TikTok with a load on each side of the line. I thought it was insane and would take much longer to dry but gave it a bash and bugger me, my washing dries so much faster and I can just yoink a full dry load off the line before hanging out the next one.

How many people are in your household? We are 3 and have 1.75 machines a week.
Lyncoops · 27/09/2023 20:21

Does your garage have a heater in there. I’m thinking of buying a dehumidifier for my garage

Sparklynewname · 27/09/2023 20:27

5 tall adults, 2 dogs and 1 old incontinent cat who sheds fit everywhere and keeps weeing on the bath towels. I am always doing washing!

DaisyWaldron · 27/09/2023 20:33

I dry mine indoors, but have a dehumidifier running when clothes are drying.

Ilefttownonsaturday · 27/09/2023 20:42

I dry my clothes outside from early March to Nov, if it's dry then a lot of the moisture evaporates outside. I dried 2 loads today as it was a windy day, anything damp is brought inside and left to dry on the airer overnight.

Ilefttownonsaturday · 27/09/2023 20:46

In the winter I wash my clothes at home and then take to the laundrette to tumble dry. I put a delayed wash on Fri night so it's washed by Saturday am for me to take to laundrette by dc activity club.

BooneyBeautiful · 28/09/2023 11:25

I have an open plan house so just dry my clothes on the airer on the landing. Because the warm air rises in the winter, the clothes dry really quickly! I always have the very small window in my bedroom open and leave the door open, so there is always some fresh air circulating upstairs. My DD's house is colder than mine, so last year I bought her a heated airer with a cover to keep the heat in, but I don't think she switches it on very often, only in extremely cold weather.

BooneyBeautiful · 28/09/2023 11:28

TheVolturi · 14/03/2022 11:55

If I put clothes on an indoor airer rack thing, and stand out outside in the sun, will they dry ok or will the middle bits stay damp?

As long as there is fresh air circulating, the bits in the centre will still dry, although may take a little longer than items hung on the outside of the airer.

FrenchandSaunders · 28/09/2023 11:32

Make sure you give it an extra fast spin at the end, makes all the difference.

Roxy69 · 28/09/2023 14:42

I just use those things that hang from the top of the radiator in the winter with no problem whatsoever. Clothes line in the summer. I hate to waste energy on the dryer and it's costly apparently.
