Due to the plumbing in my ancient flat, the main bathroom has a macerator toilet. Not sure if any of you have experience of these, but they can be an absolute nightmare. I have spent hundreds of pounds over the years on repairs, as normal plumbers tend not to want to deal with them, and the specialist engineers (they are very few and far between) charge a fortune.
I have a cleaner come in fortnightly. I have warned the owner of the cleaner company about the toilet, and how only water and loo roll can go down it.
On Monday, my flat was cleaned. I came home after work to use the loo, and noticed that one of the rubber bits under the loo seat had come off. I remember thinking fleetingly to myself that I hoped it hadn't gone down the loo.
Tuesday morning, the loo grinds to a halt. Something is obviously blocking the motor. Sometimes it takes a while for this to happen, rather than it be an immediate thing.
The guy comes round to fix it (I had tried but was unsuccessful) and lo and behold, it was the rubber thing that he pulled out.
I cannot say with absolute certainty, but I am pretty sure that the rubber bit came off during the clean. It had been there and then it just wasn't.
My bill has just come through from the engineer. It is £180 and he was here for half an hour max. Crazy money. But he's working alone in my city, so can command the price he wants.

Should I pass this on to the cleaning company? Offer to pay half?
I don't know how to proceed.

I should add a couple of things: last time it broke, the engineer said that mop water had been emptied down the loo. Again, this coincided with a cleaner visit (and we would never do this, as we know how temperamental it is!). This wasn't the sole reason for the breakage, so I did not pass this bill on and paid it in full myself. However it's indicative of how my instructions to the owner were ignored.
A piece of furniture got accidentally smashed by one of the cleaners a while back. I never claimed this, as I felt bad as we weren't long out of Covid and I didn't want to put a small business under any pressure.

I don't know if I should suck it up and pay, and I certainly don't like to accuse. But I do remember seeing that the rubber bit had come off after the clean. And I'm starting to feel a bit resentful.

What would you do?
Thanks.

Sorry, it's human waste and loo roll that can go down it. Not sure why I said water, although pure water wouldn't cause it to break!
And the mop water emptied down there was gritty, which is why the engineer knew what it was.

Bumping! I know my post is a bit long, but I'd really appreciate some advice Smile

I’d maybe mention it to the cleaning company and see what they have to say.

Things to consider though…

Do you have to same cleaner every week? It may be that the owner has noted your instructions but if you have a different cleaner regularly then it’s entirely possible that instructions would’ve fallen through the crack.

The instructions may be on your notes but my not be fully understood if the cleaner isn’t fluent in English - I appreciate that this is up to the owner to explain but just a consideration!

If you do raise it with them, they might not be happy about it and could cause a falling out and therefore you might have to look for a new cleaner!

Have you had this cleaner long?!

I would put a post it on the toilet lid.
DO NOT EMPTY BUCKET INTO TOILET

Even better, put a piece of sellotape closing it and say PLEASE CLEAN OUTSIDE OF TOILET ONLY

I would write the company an email. Dear Jen, I'm writing to let you know an issue about the toilet. As I mentioned before it is a merca mabob toilet which means it has special plumbing. I have asked for nothing to be poured into the toilet.

On Feb 14 the day after a visit from your company we had to call in a plumber for a blockage of the basement toilet and he removed a piece of rubber from the u bend. On March 3 the day after another cleaning visit the plumber had to be called again and he said the problem was grit such as from dirty mop water being poured down the toilet. Both these visits cost £180 each from the plumber.

Please can you reiterate to cleaners who clean our house that nothing is to be poured into the toilet. We are otherwise happy with the service you offer but if this happens again I will be forced to pass on the cost.

I have taped shut the basement toilet and only the outside is to be cleaned please.

I have a macerator and feel your pain, in fact I'm pretty sure it was no coincidence I got ghosted by a boyfriend after he once get dirty trying to fix it for me 🙈

Anyway, yes could have been the cleaner but ultimately why did the rubber thing come off? If your toilet seat was damaged/faulty and they didn't even notice it would be hard to blame them.

It's awkward isn't it giving guests strict instructions to not put anything else other than loo roll down there!

Fortunately my partner and step dad have become a dab hand at fixing it thanks to you tube.

Tell them explicitly not to clean the toilet. Clean it yourself. Put something on top of the toilet lid before the cleaner comes stating do not touch. Alternatively get new cleaners if this doesn't work.

HiJenny35 · 13/03/2022 21:48

Tell them they aren't allowed in that room and clean that room yourself. No you can't pass on the bill, you don't even know that they did it and you've got a toilet that isn't ike everyone else's and doesn't actually work properly, they shouldn't be expected to know that, just tell them to leave that room.

We had this with carers putting wipes down the toilet. We handed them the bill and put a sign up above the toilet so they couldn't plead ignorance in future.
