AIBU to think that Giles Coren's column about Ukraine is disgusting?

I know that it is supposed to be satire, but I can't find any humour in Giles Coren's article about Ukraine today. It makes me want to cancel my Times subscription. A few days ago a maternity hospital was bombed and terrified families are being shelled while they try to escape! The whole world could be dragged into a nuclear conflict.

(It is behind a paywall, but the general gist is that he's bored of people talking about the war, no one cares about Ukraine because it's far away, and maybe the Russians aren't so bad, and what if the Ukranians really are Nazis. I've also attached some screengrabs). Maybe I'm not clever enough to appreciate Giles' sophisticated brand of satire. I didn't go to public school or Oxford University like he did, but even The Times' readers who tend to applaud his sneering restaurant reviews in the comments seem to be appalled.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/03/2022 20:07

I think he missed the general mood by a mile.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 12/03/2022 20:07

Haven't read it.Stopped even glancing in his direction after he wrote an article which roughly said "I hate fat people".
Quite how he is as he is with when his father was articulate and witty I know not. I guess his sister inherited all of that.

thevassal · 12/03/2022 20:09

@Boood

Nobody ever starts a thread when he writes a good column. He did one about Alexander Mosley that was really humane and compassionate, and clearly from the heart. And his one on the London property market last week was absolutely spot on.
To be fair, writing a half decent column once in a blue moon is the bare minimum to expect of someone who is paid (a vastly inflated wage compared to a "no name" journalist) TO BE A COLUMNIST!

Nobody starts threads when I have a good day at work either, it's not exceptional for competent adults!

I said this re: Dawn Foster but so unbelievable this odious cunt hasn’t been fired yet. But hey if The Times are getting clicks, even hate clicks, they’ll keep him.

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/03/2022 20:18

He’s a knob riding on his connections, but I do think he can be funny in print, and I am all for dark humour. But this isn’t funny at all, is just desperate.

Interestingly he apologised for misreading the room in the comments, which is very unlike him. I think after his vile comments about Dawn Foster he might be feeling less untouchable..

Leol · 12/03/2022 20:22

I’ve always thought he is a kind of smug Katie Hopkins.

chipbutties4ever · 12/03/2022 20:32

Can anyone see him being booked to be on TV again? I can't see him on any sort of mainstream show like the BBC 2 Amazing Hotels series after the Tweets mocking Dawn Foster's death and now this. Maybe GB News will call for Giles. But I can't imagine him being on Master Chef, for instance. I've watched a lot of Master Chef and Bake Off and I can't remember him ever being on either of those series, which is strange considering he's such a famous food critic. He was on the F Word, but that was years and years ago.

I can’t stand him or his smug, self-satisfied sister.

user1493494961 · 12/03/2022 20:52

He's not a nice person.

StScholastica · 12/03/2022 21:01

I stopped my subscription 2 years ago because of him, he is vile.

chipbutties4ever · 12/03/2022 21:05

I'm very tempted to cancel my subscription. He also wrote this very worrying article about having his "sexiest holiday" ever with his three year old daughter that I also can't believe The Times ever published and surely must be a huge red flag.

It’s hard when you get jobs based on your dad’s talents rather than your own but still have to turn in a column.

Writing definitely doesn't come easily to Giles.
CasperGutman · 12/03/2022 21:18

Wow. What was he thinking? What was the editor thinking? Bloody hell.

zeddybrek · 12/03/2022 21:20

@swedishEdith

He's an attention-seeking arse who has had a career based on his father's name.

Perfectly put.

I cancelled my Times subscription after reading too many extreme right wing views in the vile comments sections during the war in Syria.

Bunce1 · 12/03/2022 21:29

I prefer Jeremy Clarkson to Giles and THATS a low fucking bar.

I loath Jeremy.

Giles- he’s all about the shock value and has no real actual intelligence of any merit. Riding on his name, his accent and what very little credibility he has left.

Giles, do be a dear and fuck off.

Thoosa · 12/03/2022 21:31

He’s long been a professional arsehole.

The kindest thought I have about him is it must be difficult to be the idiot son of such a witty and erudite father. Nowhere near a sufficient excuse, though.

YouHaveYourFathersBreasts · 12/03/2022 21:33

Giles Coren being an attention seeking, odious shit? Surely not. Best thing to do is vote with your feet or in this case, your wallet.

mrshoho · 12/03/2022 21:42

He lacks any sense of humanity to write in this way. Both he and his sister appear to living in a bubble far removed from reality. I previously thought Victoria was better but her comments on the last leg put me right off.

The thing I don't understand is who is his audience and who are his fans? 90% of the comments in The Times on the article today are negative, there are multiple thread on Mumsnet (which presumably is mainly middle class women) about how much he is disliked and also thousands of Twitter comments criticising him. Where are the Giles Coren fans? Why doesn't anyone come out to defend him or back him? (Apart from Esther and Pavel Pilnik, of course Wink).

I think he was aiming for ironic and edgy and ended up with unfunny and prattish.
He has apologised in the comments and said he had clearly missed the mark. I appreciate that at least.

VestaTilley · 12/03/2022 22:08

He’s trying to be a contrarian, but he hasn’t got the brains to carry it off. He’s become very boring.

VisaQuestions · 12/03/2022 22:19

Ok, with family still in Ukraine I personally found the dark satire apt.
I’m not familiar with him, but isn’t he just voicing something we could face?
I can’t get visas for family, I’m constantly confronted every time I go online by false news and comments about Ukraine.
It’s not pleasant. But buying Russian oil, not allowing Ukrainians entry and trying them up in visa nightmares, watching them get slaughtered and generally being the country in Europe that has the biggest void between what is said and what is done isn’t good.
I think the dark satire is rather appropriate to the dark situation. But I am feeling very bitter. So maybe it’s me

Milomonster · 12/03/2022 22:20

Why the fuck do the media keep giving this twat space to air his bile?? First the creepy article about his daughter and then the cruel comments about the Guardian journo. Who is his target audience?
