To keep the Aga?

We are having the kitchen re-done.

DH wants to replace of the Aga with fantastically modern electric ovens/microwaves that cook food quickly, easily, and at low cost without the extreme hassle of an Aga.

DH says:

  1. The Aga costs too much to run (oil... don't ask it came with the house)
  2. It's quicker to boil an electric kettle
  3. We don't live in the country (we live in Fulham) or have a springer spaniel.

This is my ABSOLUTE worse nightmare.

How can I convince DH to keep the Aga?

How are people even taking this thread seriously?

@EmmaStone

thought of keeping it running 24/7 365 days a year made me feel physically sick at the environmental and financial waste. I never understood the 'don't need a tumble dryer' arguments either. Are Aga owners doing far fewer loads of washing than the rest of us? How would you dry 4 loads of washing in a day, as well as use the Aga to cook?

I’ll not take lectures on environmental sustainability from anyone doing 4 loads of washing a day!! Wtf.

I know!

OP what breed of dog DO you have? Perhaps that might help us advise you further.

Don't you have a smallish woodland in the country somewhere? Suberb for tax off-sets as I'm sure your DH must know.

Even if the washing machine isn’t troubled for six or seven subsequent days? And without knowing how many people the laundry covers?

Moved recently to a house with an Aga... Old owners pride and joy. Thought I'd hate it but it's amazing. Cooks beautiful - food tastes so much better. House is well insulated so we never bother turning on central heating on. It's replaced the dryer, kettle, toaster (aga toast is amazing), coffee machine, slow cooker etc. Just had a smart meter fitted this week to see how much money we are burning and was shocked its not nearly as bad as I thought. Wouldn't every buy one but wouldn't ever get rid of it either!

Apologies for not specifying that the 4 loads of washing a day are the days I am in the house. With 2 adults, 2 teens, bedding, towels and sports, I tend to have 4-5 loads twice a week.

Our house had an AGA in which I love. It's about 40 years old and runs on gas.I wouldn't buy one in this day and age due to the energy waste issue but I will miss it if ever we move house.I have occasionally totted up the cost to run and it has always been acceptable when, as per pp , you consider extremely low heating costs for the rest of the house, no need for tumble dryer , usefulness for back up heating/ cooking etc.I'm a decent home cook and really enjoy cooking on it.Obvs, this year the running costs are likely to be a bit eye watering so one can understand your DH's pov but getting rid of things isn't a neutral cost .At one time there was an excellent second hand market for AGAs but I don't suppose they will be in great demand this year.

A certain amount over a normal usage triggers an exception in billing systems - the tolerance is quite high though so if you submitted a reading at a few hundred units more than it shows it will prob work.

That being said this isn't going away, my advice is to pay as much as you can over what you are using IF IF IF you can afford it.

If you can't then you can't and the situation is crap

@EmmaStone. Fair enough.
