I've just made a donation for the war on Ukraine

The default donation was £30. I wondered how you all felt about this. I think the default donation should be lower and people should decide what they want to give. I find this all the time. Next week with Comic Relief it will be text such and such to give £20. It should just be a text number for you to donate what you want instead of making people feel inadequate if they can't afford it. AIBU?

Well good for you Hmm

KaptainKaveman · 11/03/2022 20:04

If you can afford £30 why are you whingeing?

CremeEggThief · 11/03/2022 20:22

I donated again today and found it very straightforward to change the amount to £10, which is all I can afford. No shame or guilt- every little helps.

YouHaveYourFathersBreasts · 11/03/2022 20:25

I couldn’t afford to donate £30 so I just changed the amount when I donated the other day. I don’t understand why you didn’t do that? It’s very easy to Judy click on the box and type in the amount you prefer to donate Confused

RobertaFirmino · 11/03/2022 20:26

Is this some sort of stealth virtue signalling?

ButtockUp · 11/03/2022 20:29

The DEC and other websites often give standard amounts.
They will either offer you a space for your own donation or, more usually, you can override an amount suggested and put your own amount in.

I wondered that. Lots of people donate ut don't start threads about it.
TyotyaKlava · 11/03/2022 20:46

We donated £100 - more than I ever donated to anything else! But this is extraordinary circumstances and no money in the world can pay for the human loss

MissTrip82 · 11/03/2022 21:04

@oldandscunnered

I donated the £30 and they added on £5 for gift aid. I can afford this but a lot of people can't. I will donate to Comic Relief but like the previous poster I do wonder how much is creamed off and how much goes to the charity.
Creamed off? You donate to a charity that you thinks spends donated funds inappropriately? What an extremely peculiar thing to do.

Oh I saw it more as one of those ill-disguised charity bashing threads that are extremely nastily motivated. Hoping to trash charities. There are people taking threads like this as ‘evidence’ that charities are greedy, out of touch and ‘cream off’ donations.

Extremely mean spirited.

@Sandinmyknickers

That title is very misleading..sounds like you're donating to the Russians lol
I thought so too
Baaaa · 11/03/2022 21:11

I guess they do £30 in the hopes people go "I can't afford that much I'll make it £20. When they previously would have given £10 if it was blank. Someone will have worked it out.

Baaaa · 11/03/2022 21:13

@WTF475878237NC

I think there is a research on behaviour that is behind this OP. Some people will increase their donation and others reduce, but the amount won't have been plucked from thin air. It's good of you to donate whatever you can afford.
Ah sorry missed this one. I agree, there will have been research into what to put to get the most money overall.
AdoraBell · 11/03/2022 21:15

I always ignore the default amounts and donate what I can afford.

It's certainly ambiguous, the War on Want is a war against want for example.
SaggyBlinders · 11/03/2022 21:20

YABU. You can donate whatever you want/can afford Hmm.

If you go to any bank or any Oxfam shop they will take any amount of money over the counter, be it 10p, £10 or £10k.

SaggyBlinders · 11/03/2022 21:23

And if you don't want to donate, or can't afford it, then don't. But starting a thread moaning about the suggested donation set by a charity while there is a humanitarian crisis going on right now seems pretty poor taste.

Palegreenstars · 11/03/2022 21:24

YABU - charities have tons of evidence that if they don’t put an amount in the advert they get less money.

@TacoCats

I haven't donated at all. Don't plan too. 🤷🏻‍♀️
What a surprise. And how surprising that here you are on yet another thread sharing that.
FairyCakeWings · 11/03/2022 21:42

Yanbu OP. I don’t like it when the default amount is large because it makes me feel guilty for not giving that much, but then I suppose that’s why they do it. It must work for them.
