To think my boss should help as he paid me late?

I'm a single mum with two kids, I work full time with no help from their dad. I get UC childcare only. I get paid usually a day before my assessment period ends so I pay my nursery fees that day to ensure I get it back that month rather than the month after.

Our payday fell on the weekend and my boss assured me he would pay everyone on the Friday. This never happened, Saturday was my last day for being able to pay nursery and get it back. We get on well so I told him how important it was to get paid that day to make sure I pay nursery. He told me he would do it, he then paid me a day later so I have now missed the cut off point and I wont get this money back until April. I cannot afford to be without this money, I rely on this to survive the month. I want to ask if he could lend me the money until I have this reimbursed, is this unreasonable?

I'd be half arsed at work after that.
Worst he can do is sack you and you find a job that pays on time.
He wants you to be at work on time he should stick his part of the deal and pay on time as that's why you're there.

He won't understand or appreciate the impact it is having on you which is profound. Definitely have a word,- explain fully and see what he says. Most people have savings or an overdraft or something to fall back on if this sort of thing arises so he won't understand that you don't have that luxury and what it's done to your UC etc.

Will you now get penalised for having 2 payments in the same period?

ginnybag · 10/03/2022 16:36

He should have offered before you even had to ask. Payroll is the one thing that is never flexible, ever.

I run payroll for my company and I make a point of prioritising it above everything else I do.

Very, very rarely do we make mistakes, and only once have we ever paid people late and that was a banking error. The MD and I spent all day personally ringing every staff member, asking if they were okay, apologising, asking if they needed cash for anything, asking them to forward any charges or fees.... it's the only acceptable thing.

What does your contract say re your payday? It's usually worded as on or before x date? Unless it specifies that paydates falling on a weekend will be paid following working day (and not previous working day as is standard) he's on very shaky ground legally, as well as professionally.

I'm not getting this, UC does not pay depending on when you pay the bill, but it pays for the childcare taken in that AP, regardless of when it was paid.

So if your AP ends on the 19th say, you would get the 85% of the childcare paid from the 20th of one month to the 19th of the next

StrawberrySquash · 10/03/2022 17:00

We had a bank issue at work and some people got paid late. I believe work sorted any issues that caused. Which seems reason to me.

But you do have to submit proof of payment (at the moment, they have been told that they can't ask for this but they're appealing so can still require it for now) so if you don't have this they won't reimburse until you provide it.

OP I suggest that when you do get paid and pay the childcare you submit the invoice and proof straight away and leave a very nice, grovelling message on your journal explaining what happened and they might be able to make an extra payment. I had to do this when I completely forgot to upload the childcare costs one month and didn't notice until I check my statement for that month. I just did it straight away and asked if there was any chance they could reassess. They did and I actually had the childcare element in my account a couple of days before my main payment

qualitygirl · 10/03/2022 19:03

What does it say on your contract about pay day? Why is it not a set date? That is just not acceptable at all!!

Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 10/03/2022 19:12

You do, but you have up until the end of the AP to provide that

SpiderinaWingMirror · 10/03/2022 19:36

Ask him.
Dd has just started claiming UC. What with the need to submit nursery bills each month and different pay dates, it looks like a tough thing, especially if you haven't got anyone to fall back on.

I assumed OP meant that her assessment period ends the day after she gets paid so she gets paid and immediately uses that to pay the nursery bill before the end of the assessment period? Apologies if I've read that wrong?
Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 10/03/2022 22:40

Quite possibly, would be useful to know details like that

RedHelenB · 11/03/2022 09:42

@Amsiiiii

I don't know what to do really, because he's paid me late I now have no money for the month. I can't pay bills or do a food shop
As it was his error I think I'd ask.
