Vitamin D really low - do I need to take calcium with it

My blood tests show calcium is well into the middle of the range. So does that mean I don't need to worry about taking calcium alongside the vitamin D, I get enough calcium from diet to do the job? Confused

How low is your Vit D?

When mine was 11 I was prescribed a high strength Vit D supplement but nobody mentioned calcium.

Same as this. I was prescribed a loading dose and then advised to take the 'normal' daily dose that's available over the counter (GP actually told me the pound land one was fine). She never mentioned calcium.

What did your doctor say....or the one taking the test? Probably best to confirm with them that random people on the Internet!

I have a disability where vit d levels are often low, mine were very low advised to take 10,000 international units a day, calcium wasn’t mentioned at all.

DuggeeHugs · 09/03/2022 18:19

I'm on a loading dose of 50k UI for the next few weeks but there's been nothing mentioned about calcium by the doctor, pharmacist or packet leaflet.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium from your diet so no need to take extra calcium.

Pasithea · 11/03/2022 22:32

Vitamin D is transported round your body via fats. So make sure you have enough fat in your diet.

MadeForThis · 11/03/2022 22:51

I think it's advised to take vitamin K to make sure the vitamin D travels to the correct place.

Cdl84 · 11/03/2022 22:58

If you have good calcium intake in your diet (milk, yogurt, cheese, etc) no need for extra calcium.

MereDintofPandiculation · 11/03/2022 23:02

You take Vitamin D to help absorb Calcium, not Calcium to help absorb Vitamin D

Poppetlove · 11/03/2022 23:17

It’s vitamin k to help absorb D. If your buying it your self liposomal is best…

Lillyhatesjaz · 11/03/2022 23:52

Over the counter vitamin D is often combined with calcium

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 12/03/2022 00:02

Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption. But it is recommended to take Vit K if you take high doses of Vit D as the Vit K ensures the calcium doesn't end up in your blood vessels, causing heart disease.
Copied from Healthline;

The Role of Vitamin K
As mentioned above, vitamin D ensures that your blood levels of calcium are high enough to meet your body’s demands.
However, vitamin D does not fully control where the calcium in your body ends up. That’s where vitamin K steps in.
Vitamin K regulates calcium in your body in at least two ways:
• Promotes calcification of bone: Vitamin K activates osteocalcin, a protein that promotes the accumulation of calcium in your bones and teeth (4Trusted Source
).
• Reduces calcification of soft tissues: Vitamin K activates matrix GLA protein, which prevents calcium from accumulating in soft tissues, such as the kidneys and blood vessels

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 12/03/2022 00:03

So, no, you should not take calcium with Vit D if your calcium levels are normal
