Anyone know about cameras?

I need to buy a camera to take some images which are greater than 2400 x 3000 pixels.

I know NOTHING about this stuff. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Would a camera like this be very expensive?

TIA

2400*3000=7200000 or just over 7 megapixels. Pretty much every camera or phone camera does more than that now. Number of pixels tells you nothing about the quality though. We'd need a lot more info than that. What will you be using it for?

BrightF · 08/03/2022 13:23

Thanks so much for the reply. It's for a business website.

The only other thing they've said is that it needs to be over 2M. I'm not sure what that means?

They've said most cellphones wouldn't be able to achieve this. But perhaps that is wrong?

As above - iPhones as far back as iPhone 8 will comfortably manage that.

Obviously the 'why' may change the answer though

it is wrong, but there's a good chance that a mobile phone camera won't be able to achieve the clarity of image you need -- either because the lens in the phone isn't great or the phone's camera software processes the image in a particular way.

However pretty much any regular digital camera can take a photo of the correct resolution. The digital cameras I worked with in the late 90's had specs better than that, and modern cameras are far, FAR beyond that now.

KrisAkabusi · 08/03/2022 13:29

2M is 2 million megapixels. That's quite low resolution now. My Google phone is a 40m camera.

That said, unless you want enormous photos, you don't need very high resolution for a webpage. What's much more important is what the photos are going to be of. You'll have very different requirements if it's just headshots of staff, compared to a restaurant showing off their food, or a lighting supplier.

xILikeJamx · 08/03/2022 13:29

2M presumably being 2megabytes?

Which is tiny - and about right for a 7megapixel image.

If you have a phone from the past 4 years the images are probably about 12megapixel and would be about 5-8 megabytes in size

BrightF · 08/03/2022 13:34

Ah right fantastic, you've all helped. I was worried I was going to have to buy an expensive camera.

It's literally just for pictures of staff.

Thanks @gwenneh do you think this would be ok?

Honestly just use your phone (or whoever has the newest phone) before buying that.

Or hire a photographer if they have to be to a certain standard

xILikeJamx · 08/03/2022 13:48

If someone has a newish phone that has multiple cameras on the back, use that and get them to use the lens with the biggest zoom (although don't use digital zoom).

Ideally have the subject facing a window so they're well lit.

@BrightF

Thanks *@gwenneh* do you think this would be ok?
Honestly it's probably not going to be any different to using a phone camera because the resolution is the same (or not as good!) as a phone, it likely processes the images internally in the same way, and the lens is likely to be similar quality. If you desperately NEED to be seen as using a separate camera, then sure, it's fine.

I'd love to know who told you that you HAD to use a digital camera and not a mobile phone camera and why -- I do think they're wrong. @xILikeJamx has made every point correctly on this one!

Cabbagepie · 08/03/2022 15:41

Given passport photos can be done on phones now, I think you will be fine using a phone

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 08/03/2022 15:43

I used app called Photo Aid.

nearlyspringyay · 08/03/2022 16:47

A newish phone is plenty good enough. I used to carry around a dslr, use my phone now.

AnneButNotHathaway · 10/03/2022 09:53

I agree that phone cameras are so good now, you'll be fine using it! Some editing may be needed though (like color correction or exposure) but there planty of simple picture editors for PC like Photoworks or Photoshop Express if you want to do everything on mobile.

AlisonDonut · 10/03/2022 09:56

Why are you doing this work when you don't know anything about cameras? Or photography?

Are you just being tasked with buying a camera or are you going to be taking the photos? Why not just hire a photographer who already has a good camera and knows what they are doing? Or get the person who will be taking the photos to use their camera?

ButtockUp · 10/03/2022 09:59

Most phones will cope with what you're asking for but be sure to use a work phone, not a personal phone.

Sofasogood1 · 10/03/2022 10:07

Hire a photographer!!
