That this company really just don’t get it (International Women’s Day)?

I got an email from Hawsmoor restaurant today, International Women’s Day. Here’s the first paragraph (the bold is my emphasis.): ‘Hawksmoor without women. Just imagine it! Dull. Disorganised. And, to be honest, just not anywhere near as good. From our food and service to a better understanding of how to properly look after our staff, the women of Hawksmoor define (and refine!) us.’ Am I just being over sensitive in my feminist sensibilities (YABU) or are they basically commending the women in their team for doing warm and wooly wife-work (YANBU)?

A Dutch parfumerie is going with the "hey, beauty lover, buy make up today and get a discount" angle. Angry

Scrolled to the bottom of that readingmate page. A literacy organisation that doesn't bother to have anyone proofread its titles 🤣 I wouldn't bother with that bunch.

It's a bit of a clusterfuck of words even if they'd spelt lose correctly, isn't it?!

@CharacterForming

I also received the Hawksmoor email and found it thought provoking.

There's definitely stuff wrong with it, and it's not well thought through, but it highlighted the fact that there are two different facets to valuing women's labour.

Society needs to allow and acknowledge girls and women to get the big flashy high paid jobs: chefs, directors, maitre d's. But it also needs to value the roles which in practice, at the moment, are currently done by women: the HR, the admin, the general arse-wiping. Acknowledging that these roles are actually essential, and currently largely done by women, without implying that this is all that women are fit for, is a balancing act somewhat beyond the skills of the bloke who writes the Hawksmoor mailshots.

I agree with this. We need both an easier path to traditionally 'male' and therefore more celebrated/better rewarded jobs, and better rewards and more recognition for traditionally 'female' work. It's complex. Hawksmoor have rather missed the mark, I don't disagree; but it's not easy.

Jesus.
They come up with this groundbreaking notion: "We need to be teaching our boys and girls about the importance of respect, kindness, and empathy from a young age."

The people that complain about Women's Day are dicks.

MorningStarling · 08/03/2022 16:02

As Richard Herring once said, International Women's Day is the day where men treat women as if they were equal to men.

That’s nothing compared to the all blacks rugby Twitter post, I can’t work out how to link.

Thanks women for all their “wife work” in support of the men, no mention of the Black ferns (womens team) and they’ve included a player who’s a convicted domestic abuser in the photos.

RobotValkyrie · 08/03/2022 16:23

I see it as only valuing women for the services they provide. With a very narrowminded view on what those services might be.

Objectifying. Dehumanising. Fucking gross.

I can’t disclose who I work for as it would be too outing; but suffice it to say it is a large, national organisation.

The powers that be in HR have advertised, on the general bulletin, seen by everyone, for nominations for an award to celebrate International Women’s Day; specifically, women in leadership. But, and here’s the catch, you have to nominate a male. Yep, that’s what it says. You nominate a male, who has assisted these women in leadership.

To say it has caused uproar would be understating it rather.

MangyInseam · 08/03/2022 16:31

It's silly.

But honestly, most of these things are just a stupid kind of advertising, they aren't meaningful. Personally I'd rather they didn't bother.

@BluerThanRobinsEggs

It's like all the companies deleting their IWD tweets once the Gender Pay Gap Bot account tweets that the median wage of women is 45% lower in that company.
This has been amusing the fuck out of me all day. “This tweet is unavailable” is the new catchphrase for “we fucked up and got caught!”
CottonBallsUp · 08/03/2022 16:39

@Ifeelgoodgoodgood To me it is treating
women as support humans to the men folk. Perhaps I’m over sensitive but there is a way to recognise the important role that women play (including them actually playing rugby) without putting them in that support human ‘box’. Put that together with the domestic abuse information and it leaves a very nasty taste.

Yeah, it's certainly a really tone-deaf message that completely misses the mark.

Their steaks, however, are lovely.

They are indeed delicious, as are their cocktails. Which is why I found myself signed up to their mailing list Grin. They should stick to sending us information on meat and booze perhaps.

Yeah I think Hawksmoor worded it really badly. I do however like the link to the page about their female staff and I liked reading about their work and lives.

International men's day is used to highlight men's issues and address them International women's day is about cooking and wife work

CottonBallsUp · 08/03/2022 16:59

@Ifeelgoodgoodgood

I'm assuming that their misguided messages about woman that you find so awful isn't going to stop you eating their steak and cocktails then?

Bit pointless to start a thread and moan about something your not willing to do anything about.

Is it pointless? I think it has started an interesting (to me) discussion where other messages which have also missed the mark have been shared. I have seen other viewpoints which have been informative for some balance and I have appreciated.

Not everything needs to be about boycotting and cancelling. I’m planning on emailing them to say why I felt it was inappropriately worded and linking this thread. That’s enough for me, others may choose to do more. And depending on their response to my email maybe I will too.
