To ask if you had swollen tonsils with covid?

I've not had covid before. 9mo DS and I got runny noses two weeks ago. Slowly developed into a slight cough then a few days ago we both took a huge downhill. Both coughing loads of green mucus, loss of appetite and (I'm assuming same for DS) incredibly sore throat.
Just been for a covid test but realised my tonsils are huge and red with white bits. So I'm thinking we need a gp ASAP rather than waiting two days getting worse when it's not covid. I'm also freezing and can barely talk.

So YABU yep could be covid, wait.
YANBU never heard of swollen tonsils with covid, ring gp.

I've actually rang gp, they said to ring back at 1 because they're full this morning. We usually golet told to go straight in with DS but she didn't give me chance to say anything.

Yes, exactly mine and husband's symptoms with Covid - the worst sore throat ever and really swollen tonsils.

Thebig3 · 08/03/2022 09:59

I'd contact the gp about your 9mth old regardless of if it's coming or not to get him checked.

I didn't but doesn't mean you shouldn't (if that makes sense!)
I did have exactly your symptoms a few years ago complete with fever and it was tonsillitus which I didn't realise as I'd never had it before or since. That was an awful experience and needed antibiotics to clear.
Can you get your hands on an LFT test to rule covid out before calling the GP? I suspect they'll ask you to take one first anyway.
Hope you're both better soon

Took my 2 year old to the doctor thinking he might have an ear infection following a really bad lingering runny nose. She said tonsils were enlarged so mild tonsilitis. No le took that it might be covid Confused

I had very swollen tonsils and felt all shivery a few days before testing positive for covid. Id had a runny nose and a very slight cough. The cough got worse about 2 days later, and I started getting positive LFTs about 5 days after the swollen tonsils started. I was testing daily because my daughter had already tested positive.
Most covid tests are back in less than 24 hours in my experience (of about 10, my daughter's had a lot of coughs!)

Gizacluethen · 08/03/2022 11:19

All LFTs came back negative. But we had an awful night last night so i booked a PCR for this morning then when looking in the mirror to do it saw my horrific tonsils.

I do remember having tonsillitis and feeling exactly like this tbh. Which is why I'm worried about DS because I don't want to wait to see if it's covid. I'll ring the doctors at 1 (phone-in reopening) and get us an appointment. Better safe than sorry.

How long do you feel like shit for? It's not my favourite this. My jaw and cheekbones are killing too and DS is making his discomfort known 😬

It could easily be Covid. Equally there are a million other horrible viruses going round at the moment. The sore throat and tonsils were the worst thing about Covid when I had it ... but then I also came down with a second, non-Covid, virus three weeks later which was equally unpleasant. And I had no cough with Covid at all, but a terrible cough with the other virus.

Any respiratory illness can affect your throat/tonsils, and even if it's not Covid, they would need to do a throat swab on you anyway to confirm if you need antibiotics (most throat infections are viral rather than bacterial and not helped by antibiotics), unless the GP was prepared to prescribe them just on the off-chance that they might help. More often than not, tonsillitis just has to run its course (I speak from bitter experience as a regular sufferer, so I massively sympathise with how awful you're feeling - it's grimmer than grim).

Have you been able to get a look at your baby's throat to see what his tonsils are looking like? And does he have a temperature too? In the case of an adult, I'd wait for the Covid test, but I think for a 9-month-old baby I'd call the GP if he's got symptoms as rotten as yours.

I really hope you feel better soon, OP - feeling as rough as you currently do is the pits anyway, but even harder if you're trying to care for a sick baby as well. Flowers

Ah, just seen you've had negative LFTs. In that case, definitely worth calling the GP for both of you. Get well soon! x

WanderleyWagon · 08/03/2022 12:19

I had a sore throat (though not as bad as you describe) and a weird thing that although I had a total of three positive LFTs (faint but visible line), the PCR was negative. Not sure whether it was just because there was low viral load...

I had tonsils like tennis balls and a positive LFT and PCR last week. They eventually went down to the size of golf balls, and are still slightly swollen now.
