Heat pump / Condenser drier

FawnFrenchieMum · 07/03/2022 21:28

Has anyone got any experience of heat pump tumble driers? We decided to get a condenser drier after some funny smells coming from our cheap not properly vented one.

Now I’ve started researching, I’ve seen heat pump ones which seem to be more energy efficient. They are around £100-£140 more expensive to buy but I’m guessing the electric saving will quickly offset that?

Any feedback / advice?

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’re looking for tumble dryers, we’ve recently updated our best tumble dryer page with lots of great options rated by Mumsnet users, plus info on whether a heat pump or condenser dryer is best for your home. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I got the BEKO - Pro RapiDry B5T4823RW 8 kg Heat Pump Tumble Dryer in January and so far i love it. Not too loud, plenty of settings, i generally used the 'mix' setting on dry++ which gets things perfectly dry to get put away, you can set it so there is a very slight dampness which I believe is good when ironing.
There are 2 filters to catch fluff and a very large water tray, it can also be plumbed in if you don't want to remember to empty the water tank. It has an interior light to which is great for finding socks! Grin
Can't comment re energy efficiency yet as not had an electric bill and we don't have a smart meter.

Oh and the room doesn't turn into a sauna like normal condenser dryers. Mine is in the utility room.

FawnFrenchieMum · 07/03/2022 21:59

That sounds perfect! No plans to start ironing though so I’ll make sure I get one with a perfectly dry option Wink

Yes we’ve a Bosch one, so far so good. Really impressed.

Ive vot a siemens one had it a couple of years, no issues. No damp, i use the perfect dry setting too. If im being picky it throws the sheets and towels round more and they get a bit dangled but out electricity bills seem more under control than other people with sinilar size houses (also replaced dishwasher at same time)

gogohm · 07/03/2022 22:07

We've had one for over a year. They dry well, our bills are low but it does take a lot longer than a vented dryer. Fine for 2 people, a family of 6 might struggle to dry quickly enough

Fartymcfart · 07/03/2022 22:09

I have one and love it, wouldn't be without it now

HereComesTheSum · 07/03/2022 22:11

As above I have a Grundig heat pump as it had a long with parts guarantee. Its brilliant I've already had it 5 years and still going strong. I wouldn't go back to a normal condenser.

OnlyLittleMissOrganised · 07/03/2022 22:22

Don't get a Samsung 2 years old and very nearly kaput already! But love it as type of drier

JustWonderingIfYou · 07/03/2022 22:37

Got a bosch and very happy with it.

They are slower to dry a load as they dry at a lower temperature which is better for your clothes.

PurpleNebula84 · 07/03/2022 22:54

I've got the hoover one - I love it! The only downside is that if it stops and you don't turn it off/open the door, it'll spin the load round for a couple of spins to stop creasing - which is a pain in the ass if you've headed up to bed (talking 9pm ish not over night) and just as you're ready to snooze hear it kick in - but otherwise FABULOUS! Dries things very quickly and I saw almost immediate decrease in energy consumption.

PurpleNebula84 · 07/03/2022 22:55

Hoover Heat pump dryer btw

Frazzled50yrold · 07/03/2022 23:23

I've a Candy one which captures the water in an attachment to the door. It's excellent and seems much gentler on clothes.

Corcory · 07/03/2022 23:48

We have a Grundig had it about 4 or 5 years, has a large drum it works well and think it has paid for itself.

I have a Beko one. I find the electricity bills shoot up when I use it regularly so only use it occasionally. I thought they were supposed to be cheap as chips to run. Doesn’t dry as well as previous condenser drier and gets everything tangled up. Also stops when things aren’t properly dry.

Houseplantmad · 08/03/2022 14:59

I have a Baumatic and I LOVE it. So much better than the vented drier we had and so much cheaper. This one also has many more settings but I just use one or two.

WhiteXmas21 · 08/03/2022 15:32

Had a Siemens . Lasted 5 years and 1 month. I found it got slower and slower as it got older. Apparently due to a dirty condenser, which was sealed and advertised as self cleaning.
My local dealer advice was that they are not ‘there’ yet. Anyway there were not enough hours left in my life to use another so I bought a Siemens condenser. No fog. Short drying time. No noticeable increase in bills.

I don’t think any dryer is ‘cheap as chips’ to run. They all send the meter spinning but hoping these slightly less so than a normal vented or condenser.

Thanks everyone, you’ve convinced me heat pump is the way to go. Now to choose one!

I’ve got a Bosch one and I love it. I previously had a standard Bosch condenser, and the electric bills are less, and the room doesn’t sauna-ise.

However, if you have a pair of jeans you want to chuck in quickly, you can forget it! Because it’s a heat pump it works at a lower temperature so it takes a bit longer.
I’d highly recommend it, and I’d probably suggest getting a “better” brand but second hand, if that makes sense?

WhatAWasteOfOranges · 08/03/2022 21:52

I have an LG heat pump with 10year motor warranty. It’s great!

LadyOfMisrule · 08/03/2022 22:08

I tried a Beko on the advice of a repair man - huge error. Damaged all the children's school uniform on the first tumble.
Replaced it with a Bosch Serie 8 heat pump, and it's awesome.

Vikingmama79 · 11/03/2022 19:19

Bosch series 6 9kg one here - definitely recommend. John Lewis a good place to research as lots of useful reviews on there. Happy tumbling .
