To be terrified about the cost of oil

Troublesometooth · 07/03/2022 12:41

We don’t have any mains gas, heating and hot water both run on oil. We usually buy 500 litres every 8 weeks in winter which costs £200-300.

We are desperately low and the cost today is £700! We simply can’t afford to pay this to heat our home for the next 8 weeks.

Other than wearing more jumpers can anyone suggest ways of keeping warm?

@godmum56

i do feel a bit eyerolly when people leap in and say "oh you don't need the heating on, just turn it off" its in the stupid advice list along with "get a pay rise" take in ironing' or "move house"
Same here.

I feel the cold badly and can't bear it if the temp indoors is below about 20c. Even living in a well-insulated house, I sometimes put the heating on for an hour or so in the early afternoon. The mornings are fine, the front of the house gets the sun all morning and it warms it up nicely.

It really isn't the same thing as switching it off you can control, the OP has the heating on all the time, you don't need it on all the time.

I know people who live in shorts and t shirts at home in winter and complain, people who have heating on and open windows because it's too hot or to let air in.sonttes people do daft things.

Had 1014 litres of oil delivered on Friday. Cost us £1170...😱

DoubleTweenQueen · 14/03/2022 16:20

Crude oil went up from just below 90 dollars a barrel to 130 at peak, now at 110. I think someone somewhere is profiteering 🙄
We're holding out for a week or two - see how it goes. Currently 145 ppl to 175ppl and was 58ppl a few weeks ago

DoubleTweenQueen · 14/03/2022 16:56

Boilerjuice just revised pricing, so in our area is now 98-159 ppl.

DoubleTweenQueen · 14/03/2022 18:35

Oil now closer to 100 dollars a barrel.

ExchangedCat · 14/03/2022 20:33

It's currently 99ppl - 122ppl on boiler juice around here. The express price is still cheaper than the normal price - I'm thinking because the have more chance at accurately estimating the shorter term of the two prices?

DoubleTweenQueen · 14/03/2022 20:47

Could be. At least it’s stopped going up!

thegcatsmother · 14/03/2022 21:04

Boiler juice can only do 500 litres at £1.23 per litre in my area. Will see what Boris manages to wring out if the Saudis before ordering.

Pedallleur · 14/03/2022 21:19

Note that there is talk of diesel shortage/rationing esp in Germany. Heating oil is kerosene but all oil is at a high. This does NOT mean it's a stampede to the pumps. It's an issue with Russian oil and diesel and Germany. But obviously any shortfall will have to be met. Saudis prob have no interest in lowering the price.

QuebecBagnet · 14/03/2022 21:23

There’s a diesel shortage in my local city, Facebook is full of it. I’m away from home at the moment and no issues where I am so must be a local, problem but has been ongoing for days.

I did read I think in The Times about possible diesel rationing by April in the U.K.

Pedallleur · 14/03/2022 21:47

The words there are possible and diesel. Let's not all rush out. There will be enough for ordinary people if we don't go crazy and Govts have strategic reserves.

JuteWeaver · 14/03/2022 21:50

During the first lockdown, our oil supplier was offering 22ppl and would also store for you if you wanted to order more than your tank had room for! What a difference now!
We moved from a house with oil to one with an air source heat pump. It is so bloody slow to heat the rooms, though, and still uses loads of electricity to do it. Ugh! I wish I lived somewhere it was warm all year round.

DoubleTweenQueen · 15/03/2022 10:50

Boilerjuice watch! Standard delivery (in our area) has gone from 122 ppl first thing to 107 ppl just now.
Express delivery still at 98-159 ppl.

Haven't tried to order any yet so not sure how 'available' it is.

Pedallleur · 15/03/2022 10:59

At least it's starting to move downwards. Who knew you had to be a Commodities expert to heat your home

RainingYetAgain · 15/03/2022 11:01

The Oil Club are usually good, and when we had oil I found them and Goff the best price wise and service pretty good.
I would be worried about Oil theft at the moment, it was a thing last time the prices were high, the local primary school had their Oil nicked then. I would definately be looking at a tank alarm if we still had one.
Like a PP our boiler and tank needed replacing and we bit the bullet and went to an ASHP and fixed.

ExchangedCat · 15/03/2022 12:49

98-112ppl here today. Diesel on the other hand is now 175-188ppl locally. Sheesh.
