That's it. I now have the formula for successful and doable weight loss. Here they are, there are 2 methods that I can say absolutely work. But please don't tell me that "they don't work because people often put all the weight back on" - it's not the fault of the diet; diets will only work if you stick with them.

  1. Fast 800 Keto After 7 days - 2" lost from my waist; down by a dress size; suddenly regained a lot of formerly worn clothes. Pros - fast results, very motivating Has science behind it so has integrity (Dr Mosley and his GP wife) The food recipes are easy to prepare and the food is gorgeous - I'm so enjoying the food.

Cons - the first phase is hard as though the food is excellent, the portions are small (but you do get used to it after the first week or so).

  1. Slimming World Pros - allows you to eat a diet where no foods are excluded, so you can tailor it to personal requirements eg incorporate a bit of alcohol, chocolate, etc you get my drift. Easy to follow - no need to count calories.

Cons - weight loss is invariably slower eg average loss for me a few years ago was 1 - 2 lbs a week.

I did SW a few years ago, lost nearly 2 stone and then Covid hit so no meetings or weigh ins to help keep me on track. And then I did all the Covid stuff too eg lots of baking and bread making (and put over half of the weight back on).

Currently now on Fast 800 Keto to shift the aforementioned weight gain.

This kind of advice sounds so counter intuitive to me…

@Proudboomer
The modern diet is what makes people overweight. Practically everything is packed with carbs as carbs are used as cheap fillers. Even so called healthy brown and seeded breads have a high carb content.
Rice and potatoes all used to bulk out meals are just starch which again is carb and just turns into sugar the moment it hits your digestive tract.
Pasta again is just carb and used to bulk out a meal. Pretty much every main food source eaten these days is just to high in carb and the volume we eat it at is just too much.
The body doesn’t need carbs at all. It can get everything it needs from protein, fats and fibre yet even diets like slimming world are still promoting the eating of carbs.
Diet foods and the increase in the labelling of meals as “no added sugar” is just another con to make us think it is better for us as when you read the nutriental value on the labelling it is still packed full of carb and carbs = sugar.
The only way to lose weight and keep it off is a life style change count carbs not calories. A serving of rice should be two tablespoons max not the silver foil container full you get from the takeaway and again with pasta and potatoes or even better yet just don’t eat them.”

I eat lots of carbs , oatmeal or muesli for breakfast, bread with lunch, potatoes or rice or pasta for dinner

We’ve no issues with our weight

I don’t think carbs are necessarily bad Confused

Have you done any blood tests to check your inflammation markers?

I ate as you do for years (common amongst vegetarians) but it made me feel horrendous (tired/lethagic) and the weight piled on. I definitely don’t run well on carbs. Fat and protein, different story. I’m not hungry, certainly don’t eat 3 times a day: I generally 16:8 or 18:6. I can do a 3 day water fast without thinking about it (there are amazing health benefits to fasting).

We didn’t evolve to eat grains and potatoes are poisonous to us raw, which tells you they aren’t naturally part of the human diet in its truest sense. We haven’t evolved much biologically since our cave dwelling days.

Diets work if you stick to them.

Slimming world is good in the sense you can eat family meals without faffing about trying to work out calories. It's an easy diet to follow especially if you have a lot to lose.

Exercise is great, building muscle is great, but realistically if people are very overweight and unfit it is very hard to chance this through exercise alone. The healthy eating needs to be hand in hand with exercise.

Agree that diets don't work. I tried keto, slimming world, weight watchers, noom and could not keep the weight off. I yoyo dieted for around 20 years. The conflicting advice out there was so confusing - I would get to "goal" and then go right back to my old habits. I have figured it out now and managed to stay within my healthy BMI for years now. I ended up going to therapy to sort it out and figured out the thoughts and behaviours that were keeping me stuck. Cognitive behavioural therapy for weight loss worked for me. 12 sessions and I have never looked back.

Congrats on finding something that works for YOU OP. I have also found something that works - healthier eating (everything within proportion) and consistent exercise. :) It’s sustainable because I’ve changed the way I think about both food and exercise.

@Vallmo47 I think this is key - you can sustain it cos you've changed the way you think about food and exercise. Can I ask what changed for you?

Different horses for different courses. They work for you, great.

I don't diet and have been a healthy weight all my life bar immediately after having babies 2 and 3. I got back to my healthy weight by doing what I've always done - lots of fruit and veg, avoiding shit processed food and moving lots. We don't eat meat. I have friends who stay slim by avoiding carbs and eating loads of animal products. One who eats loads but is an ultra runner.

I just think this is an odd post especially from someone who sounds like a yo yo dieter...

@JulieBur I went for a yearly check up and all my levels were borderline or downright awful. The GP phoned me for a consultation, very matter of fact, no nonsense and it was what I needed. My mum died of similar issues I was starting to develop so enough was enough. I’ve always been up and down with my weight over the past 40 years, I go through periods of thinking “Life is short, have some cake” and I equally go through periods of “Life is short, be careful so you don’t shorten it even further!”
I’m sure my motivation will go again for one reason or another (usually goes hand in hand with poor mental health- feeling down often means I over eat to compensate). I will say that once you do find that motivation don’t let it go - I find exercise has helped massively with my mental health. All the science tells you this but you know when you have to experience it for yourself before you believe? That’s me. :)

2 tablespoons of rice as a serving? Haha sure thing. I bet all those people in India and China do that….
