What age did your DC first get a sickness bug?

DS is 4.5.

He had a cold once at about age 2.5. Cleared within days.

Never had a sickness bug.

I have no idea why. He licks street floors (very hard to stop), and has licked bins outside etc Envy behaviours I have to keep a close eye on. But yeah, he licks everything! Other disgusting things as well that I won't mention to save you all

Why is he never unwell? Certainly NOT a brag post before anyone says so. I'm just curious. I remember being unwell at least a few times a year when I was young.

My DFriend has a poorly toddler at the moment and I can't help but feel slight envy at her DC laying on a sofa watching films. I can only ever dream!

What age did your DC first get a sickness bug? I remember my siblings all having a bug by age 1 (I'm quite a bit older)

Our eldest had terrible D&V and ended up in hospital on a drip for dehydration at 15mth (they go down hill fast at that age). She'd been going to nursery a couple of months, she had a lot more illnesses than the younger ones who started nursery at 3yr.

beautifulsay · 07/03/2022 10:01

Did he go to nursery ? And if so, at what age did he start ? Really interesting thread. I thought all kids are sick all the time.

rileyhaspiley · 07/03/2022 10:03

@beautifulsay pre school and nursery since about 1 year and 2 months old. Also licks public bins and floors HmmEnvy (argh!)

Wow amazing ! Did you breastfeed for very long ?

Asking as a mummy who wasn't able to breastfeed very long, so no judgements. But they do say it helps the immune system. So just trying to understand !

beautifulsay · 07/03/2022 10:09

@rileyhaspiley my little one is 2 and started nursery a few months ago and has been constantly ill!

rileyhaspiley · 07/03/2022 10:09

@beautifulsay Yes, just over 3 years of breastfeeding Smile

But, I don't really think it's that much of a factor? My best friend has a lovely DD who was breastfed for a similar amount of time. She's always picking things up

@beautifulsay I have a very prem baby. She's a newborn but I bet you she will be constantly unwell. It's sort of a given for micro prems

It's really common for them to be in and out of hospital actually, even if otherwise healthy

My DC never got a sickness bug. They’re now teenagers.

Icemast · 07/03/2022 10:12

I was apparently the same as a baby, never poorly. My DS however seems to be quite relentlessly poorly, also has viral induced wheeze so often when he has a cold he needs to have oxygen and nebulisers in hospital. Even with a preventer inhaler and blue inhalers he went through a period where it was every few weeks :( so I'd not question it and just roll with it...

Wow 3 years is amazing ! I do wonder if it does help.

There must be a reason why he doesn't get sick as much. Maybe his immune system is wired differently or something like that. I'm sure some clever scientists are doing studies on this kind of thing.

Rory1234 · 07/03/2022 10:15

As a child I caught everything going - and I still do as an adult. I have a healthy lifestyle, have no underlying conditions etc but will catch anything and am ill frequently.

My sister who had the same upbringing as me and lives a similar lifestyle but is NEVER ill. She had to get a medical form signed by her GP recently and they told her she hadn’t been to the GP for 18 years Grin

Obviously sometimes there’s more to it but sometimes it’s just luck of the draw!

bruffin · 07/03/2022 10:16

What blood type is he?
My dcs are in mid 20s and very rarely got sickness bugs. I am blood group B which apparently gives resistance to norovirus and i havent had many sickness bugs in my life. Dont know what dc blood type though but good chance they would have inherited my B

HorseInTheHouse · 07/03/2022 10:17

It is actually blowing my mind that there are children who have never vomited ever. Can people go their lives without vomiting? It seems as strange to me as never getting a runny nose.

That's interesting. I am B positive and I spent my entire childhood thin as a rake because I constantly had vomiting and diarrhoea bugs ! I mean every 4-6 weeks I was out with a stomach flu. They didn't know what to do with me, it was terrible. I remember constantly vomiting.

I’ve never vomited and I’m 50 - unless you count one incident of morning sickness when pregnant. That’s it.
Bytrgrewd · 07/03/2022 10:26

I do understand the wish for peace but imagine a child vomiting from a top bunk Envy

Wow! I genuinely thought it was a universal human experience. Was it very strange for you the one time it did happen? I remember my children were very distressed the first few times they vomited from illness rather than baby spit up. They take it in their stride now, although of course nobody enjoys it.

grey12 · 07/03/2022 10:37

DD1 had terrible illness at 1yo Sad and it's not "watching TV", it's wondering what you're going to put on the bed now your child has thrown up on 3 sets of bedding!!!! Yes, we had to go to the hospital and put a line (extremely painful!!!) to receive fluids (very odd and uncomfortable for a small child to have the line and fluid bag for hours on end)

Fizbosshoes · 07/03/2022 10:39

In my adult life I've probably been sick maybe 5 times (I'm in my early 40s) and I've been with DH nearly 20 years and he's probably been sick less than that.

TheBareTree · 07/03/2022 10:44

Mine is 5 and has never vomitted 🤷🏻‍♀️

NerdyBird · 07/03/2022 10:51

DD was about 5. She had a fairly mild dose of D&V, lasted about a day. She is fairly robust. People said when kids start nursery/school they get ill all the time but she rarely did. Hopefully that will continue!

I don’t really remember. Just needing to be sick and then feeling a lot better when I was sick. My DC have never vomited either. We do - and I include DH in this - get the normal coughs and colds, but when people talk about “sickness bugs”, I’ve got no idea what that is, as we’ve never had them.
HorseInTheHouse · 07/03/2022 11:13

It's interesting though that despite no experience you instinctively knew what 'needing to be sick' felt like and didn't just vomit in your bed or down your t-shirt like a small child (or I assume you didn't!).

All you who have children with cast-iron stomachs are very lucky! Cleaning up after children with tummy bugs has been one of my least favourite bits of parenting.

TheVolturi · 07/03/2022 11:15

Ahhhh you've given it the kiss of death now op. Feel free to think these things, but never say them out loud!! 🤣🤣🤣

Looubylou · 07/03/2022 14:01

11 - has vomited once at age 1 after egg. No D or V since then. I have that it's very odd though. Plenty colds and coughs though.
