To ask how many extra-curricular activities your DC do?

DD1 (4) is in Reception and does:

Monday - Drama 4-5.15pm
Tuesday - Nothing
Wednesday - Nothing
Thursday - Rainbows 4.30-5.30pm
Friday - Multisports 3.15-4.20pm
Saturday - Football 9.45-10.30am
Sunday - Nothing

Is this too much? DD1 enjoys all her clubs and I'm lead by her personal interests.

How many clubs do your DC do, and how old are they?

DD1 (reception) does 4 activities during weekdays and 2 at weekends. Plus ballet and music during her school day. She has always been active and busy and I like that she's exposed to a range of activities and social groups. Everything is local, either on her school site or walking distance.

cadburyegg · 07/03/2022 10:10

That would be too many activities for my two at 4yo but if your DD is happy then crack on, you know your child best and what she's able to cope with and enjoy.

DS7 (y2) does beavers on Wednesday evenings and swimming on Saturday mornings. He used to do a sports club after school on a Monday but they had to cancel it. I've asked him if he wants to do football, other activities etc and he's always said no. He loves being at home tbh! I'd be happy for him to do one other extra curricular activity, I think 2 plus swimming is more than enough for him. In September he'll be going to the ASC 2 days a week so that's 2 more evenings gone.

livingthegoodlife · 07/03/2022 10:13

year 2:
monday - half hour dance
tuesday - half hour swim lesson
wednesday - 10 minute dance run through (rehearsal)
Thursday - Beavers - 1 hour
Friday - swim half hour
Saturday - 2 hours dance
sunday - nothing

This doesn't feel too much, lots of the evening left for play and homework etc.

Looubylou Yes my eldest is like this (Year 7) my younger one (Year 3) does as much as he is allowed. Different characters.

7 and 4 year old. They both go to after school club one night, and do swimming lessons, plus the 7 year old gets one other activity of their choice, currently Brownies.

Both children have asked to do more activities but DH and I work Mon-Fri and I feel we can only give so much with homework, cooking and housework already squeezed in each evening.

Weekends we do plenty of physical activity, days out and see friends and family so they get plenty of stimulation.

MinnieMountain · 07/03/2022 10:21

Year 3:
Monday- school Eco club
Wednesday- school archery club.
He doesn’t want to do anything else, although DH is going to get him started playing hockey as we feel he needs a proper sport.

I feel bad reading this as mine do none! My 4 year old is tired after school and my older boys use to do football one day a week after school but both told me they hated it

GinLimeandLemonade · 07/03/2022 10:30

My 7 yea

Muststopeating · 07/03/2022 10:30

@AHungryCaterpillar I'm with you. This thread is terrifying. I have 3 under 5. Eldest has just started ballet and is on a wait list for gymnastics. We live in the back end of beyond and any activity that they want to do will be a 30-60min round trip plus me waiting around for the duration of the activity.

Hard enough fitting nursery around work as it is (DH works away and no such thing as wraparound care up here) so no chance they'll get more than 2 activities each a week and even that will be horrendous!

GinLimeandLemonade · 07/03/2022 10:31

Mu 7 year old does none. He used to do Forest School after school but that got cancelled. If he asks then we'd say yes but he'd prefer to be at home 🤷‍♀️ we do a day out at the weekends and hang out at home in the garden/go to the park etc.

Tohaveandtohold · 07/03/2022 10:37

DD1 in year 4
Mon-violin in school and gymnastics after school
Tues-gymnastics
Wed-swimming
Thu- nothing
Fri- gymnastics
Saturday morning- violin county group
Sunday- sometimes some gymnastics competitions

The gymnastics started as only one day and now she’s an espoir and it’s taken over our lives. I desperately want her to stop but she does not want to.

DD2 is 3 so she goes to nursery and does swimming on Wednesday. No time for anything else.

I try to limit to 3 lesson-type extracurriculars per week per child, and we have a strict ‘no weekend activities’ policy because I think it’s important to guard our family time. We’re a musical house, and instruments are sneaky because they require practice 6 days/week in addition to the weekly lesson, so it makes it hard to pick up too many other extras. Once the kids do their homework and instrument, they are usually ready to just chill and play instead of going to another activity.

DC 1&2, in year 2, have 1 instrument, 1 music class, and 1 sport each.

DC 2, in reception, has 1 music class and 1 sport. She will start her instrument in the autumn.

We take each year as it comes.

DaisyWaldron · 07/03/2022 10:49

Mon - free
Tues- drama
Weds- DofE, sport (terrible timing)
Thurs- free
Fri- music lesson
Sat- orchestra

DS (12) sports club on Fridays, and a couple of school lunchtime clubs.
