To contract the GP about ovulation pain

Since having DD2 at the start of last year, I get awful ovulation pain. It affects my entire day, and today the only thing that worked was dihydrocodeine (which I had left over from a wisdom tooth removal last month!). Even after that took effect, I could still feel it. The first time I had it (when my period came back 7 months PP) I was worried it was appendicitis! I have now realised it's ovulation pain, as it occurs every month around a fortnight before my period is due, and lasts a whole day before it disappears. I am not on any contraception at the moment, and don't wish to go on any hormonal versions, but I am due to get a copper coil fitted soon. Is it normal for ovulation to hurt this much?! It really wipes me out.

It used to feel like I had spiked golf balls in my groin and someone had poured chilli down the front of my legs for about 36 hours. I also have endometriosis so I used to have a week of hell with my period then a week or so later the ovulation pain then two weeks later back to period pains. The mini pill and later the mirena coil gave me my life back.

NSAID like ibuprofen often work better for this sort of pain but they are most helpful if you take them early as they can damp down the build up of the pain messengers (prostaglandins). If you get gut problems with it then Buscopan can help as it is an anti-spasmodic.

Thank you so much everyone. It finally abated this evening after an almighty burst of pain. I know hormonal contraception would help, but it unfortunately has awful effects on my skin! Good tip with Buscopan, thank you.

Late to the party but I'm the same since having a baby. It's so painful! Have you spoken to the GP? It would have been very handy to know I was ovulating when we were trying!!!!!

Covidwoes · 09/03/2022 16:20

@squirrelnutkins1 I have an appt tomorrow! Got very lucky with a cancellation. Will keep you posted!

Oh brilliant!

Go see your GP. I've always had some ovulation pain but it got steadily much worse after my ds was born 10 years ago when I was 25. I didn't go to the gp until mu ovulation pain stopped and my periods went haywire. I then got told at 34 that I'd gone through menopause already. I still wonder if the ovulation pain was connected to my ovaries failing so young.

Covidwoes · 09/03/2022 18:07

Oh wow @Sarahplane that's interesting. How did you feel about that? I'm done having children, but it must have been hard to hear that in your thirties.

Pretty shocked. I have 2 kids from a previous relationship but was hoping to have another with my husband (who has none of his own) so it was difficult to hear. Came completely out of the blue as noone in my family has gone though early menopause before.

I had a GP appointment yesterday to talk to her about the pain and hormones. She has referred me for an ultrasound and suggested HRT which I think will be a life changer.

Covidwoes · 09/03/2022 19:57

It must have been such a shock @Sarahplane. Hope you're ok now.

@Quornflakegirl that's good you've been referred for an ultrasound. I just hope they don't fob me off by trying to convince me to take hormonal contraception to stop me ovulating. It really doesn't agree with me.

Update! GP was helpful and thankfully didn't fob me off with 'go on hormonal contraception'. I've been referred to gynaecology (this is also to investigate a prolapse I have, but the painful ovulation was mentioned too).

I am really glad your GP took you seriously. It’s worth getting it checked out.

CalamityJaney · 15/03/2022 12:49

Thanks so much for the update. Typically I didn’t get any pain last month so forgot all about it but it’s back with avengeance today (day 15 as usual) which has triggered me to think about speaking to my GP again. I have private healthcare through work and am not sure whether to just go down that route. I’m now panicking about menopause (just turned 40) as I was hoping for another baby.
