To start charging my teenagers for leaving all the lights on

Sick and tired of repeating how fuel costs have risen and that they need to turn off lights in rooms they are not in. Teenager has gone out tonight leaving her bedroom light on. Have just been to turn it off, having noticed 3 hours later she'd left it on

Yep, Same here could scream until I am blue in the face and it would bypass them!

DS1 has just come downstairs after a shower and I notice has actually turned off all the upstairs lights Shock

I "trained" him by making him get up and go and turn off a light every time he left one on. So, if I was upstairs and noticed his bedroom light left on, rather than just turning it off, I'd go downstairs and make him go up to turn it off. It does seems to have worked. Obviously it can't work if they've gone out, but hopefully doing it often enough when they are in forms a habit.

You need to install light switches that turn off the lights within a minute or two.

It is annoying, however I don't think lightbulbs actually use much electricity unless you're still using the really old fashioned ones.
Still good to get in the habit of turning them off though.

Take the bulb out as a friend did. He did it everyday until his daughter got the message.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 06/03/2022 20:15

Dh regularly reduces how many of our lights actually have bulbs in!!

RagzRebooted · 06/03/2022 20:48

For example. A 10watt LED bulb will cost 0.28p per hour to run (using April's new price cap electricity cost per kwh). So running it for 10 hours a day for a year would cost £10.

There are many ways to be more energy efficient in the home, but unless you're using old style filament or halogen bulbs, lighting isn't only to make much difference to your energy bills.

I don't think UAB at all. The worst offender in my house is my OH who never turns a light off, likes to leave a lamp on in rooms that he's not using just so they look nice when he walks past and has been known to leave the radio on for the cats. He also likes to heat the house to 22 degrees, won't wear a jumper and if it gets too hot, rather than turn it off, will open a window.

CamdenLurker · 06/03/2022 20:59

I'm with you and have also called a family meeting ( where everyone rolls their eyes at me) to threaten all 3 teens that they will start paying if they can't flick a light switch! I've also told them I'll cancel our holiday and pay the electricity bill if they'd rather not turn them off!

Sexnotgender · 06/03/2022 21:01

YANBU. Does my bloody head in.

Poptart4 · 06/03/2022 21:04

YANBU

I've recently realised I've turned into my dad 🙈
He was always complaining about the lights and wasting electricity. I used to roll my eyes at him, now its me giving out.

Momicrone · 06/03/2022 21:06

Get smart bulbs and control them all yourself. It's annoying but not the biggest crime, they'll have left home soon enough
