Why do people think being cold is automatically more an issue than being too hot?

MotorGreenGrass · 06/03/2022 13:36

I started a thread about the heating and my lodger.

Automatically people state they can’t be cold…. At the same time, neither can I be too hot?

So surely a consensus can be meet?

lljkk · 06/03/2022 18:33

is OP or their lodger the overhot one?

Anyway, the hot one can wander around indoors in tshirt & shorts.

I have been both always-hot & ever-cold in my life, being ever-cold is easier lifestyle, ime... although I do still get overhot briefly, if I exercise lots/very warm temps.

Do you mean it would be colder than the thermometer reading? I was just saying my DS doesn't handle heat well as he is barefoot when it is sub 15 degrees. I'm the cold one in this house, I have two jumpers and slippers on right now (14.0, sun's going down).[/quote]
Tbh i the;k most people would be cold with the house at 14oC….

For me being cold means feeling cold, having cold hands and NOSE (as in its cold to the touch) with the temperature inside at 19~20oC despite wearing 2 layers p, sleepers and a blanket over me etc….

TravellingFrom · 06/03/2022 18:37

@RollaCola84 But people are dying when they can’t heat their house…. So cold is also pretty bad?

lljkk · 06/03/2022 18:38

people of heat stroke in heat waves, too. Vulnerable ppl are vulnerable

MajorCarolDanvers · 06/03/2022 18:40

Give me hot any day.

I loathe the cold.

squashedalmondcroissant · 06/03/2022 18:42

Last year I lived in an uninsulated caravan with single glazing and no central heating for a bit.

In the winter it was so cold the condensation froze on the inside of the windows. I would wear full thermals, fluffy pyjamas, 2 pairs of socks and my dressing gown (or a big fluffy jumper with a hood if it was in the wash). I had a 13.5 tog duvet with a fluffy cover and bottom sheet and sometimes would add an extra thinner blanket on top. Sometimes I was still too cold to sleep. I could see my breath inside! I spent all my time inside either working out to warm up or huddled under a blanket not wanting to move.

In the summer it reached 42 degrees - I practically skipped around wearing a floaty summer dress with a fan on, the doors and windows open and sipping cold water with ice. The sweat was literally dripping off me at times but I just draped myself in a wet sarong and was fine. I could still get on with stuff, in fact I had even more energy.

I'd take being hot every single time 😁

BookkeeperBobby · 06/03/2022 18:43

People don't die of heat stroke in 24 degree temperatures.

megletthesecond · 06/03/2022 18:45

But cold people can't just warm up. No matter how many layers. I'm cold blooded.

I need warm air around me to keep warm.

TravellingFrom · 06/03/2022 18:50

Yay like a month with 35oC in the U.K. Or 40oC in other EU countries. Not at 22~23oC.

However, whereas temperatures consistently below 18oC are an issue.

Maverickess · 06/03/2022 18:50

I find both really uncomfortable to be honest and couldn't choose between the two, but, I think I have more experience with being too cold than too hot, because of the climate in the UK and because I like being outdoors in all weathers so get cold once I've stopped moving around, worse if I've been sweating, can only warm up then if I have direct heat from a bath/shower or electric throw etc, and it's really uncomfortable almost painful (and getting more so as arthritis gets worse!).

But, I also suffer when I'm too hot, I sweat very easily, especially when I'm moving around and feel unwell if I'm too hot for too long, nausea, headache etc.
That's getting more common with peri lurking around and it's like I need fresh air or I'll start feeling faint.

Strange thing is recently, it's like my thermostat is broken, and regardless of the room temperature if I'm cold then I stay cold unless I have a hot shower etc, the room can be really warm (and I can feel that!) But I'm still cold. And if I'm too hot then I stay that way unless I use cool flannels on my face and the back of my neck or have a fan directly on me, regardless of the temperature around me. And it doesn't seem to have much to do with the weather or my surroundings these days either!

housemaus · 06/03/2022 18:50

I have awful circulation which means all my extremities (and my knees) hurt when it's cold, and I can't concentrate whatsoever if I'm trying to work when it's too cold. Takes me AGES to warm up again. I'd rather it was slightly too hot than slightly too cold any day of the week.

Having said that, I also hate being too warm/hot and hate summer... I don't want much, basically I just need someone to make it a gentle 17 degrees outside all year round and I'd be delighted Grin

bumblingbovine49 · 06/03/2022 18:53

Despite what you hear on MN about the heat being dangerous when it gets above (22-24deg) Hmm The cold kills more people than the heat each year

nypost.com/2021/07/14/more-die-of-cold-medias-heat-death-climate-obsession-leads-to-lousy-fixes/

Although heat related deaths have been rising in the last few years, the cold still kills far more

KittenKong · 06/03/2022 18:55

Me too - frostbite sucks (had it twice and it’s bloody painful). No one be leave me because I’m from Scotland originally (like the polar bear joke ‘mummy am I really a polar bear?’ ‘Yes dear, why?’ ‘Because I’m bloody freezing!’.

I am so prepped for cold weather though - but when it’s really hot there’s not much you can do apart from stay inside with aircon (if you are somewhere super hot) otherwise keep in the shade of you can. Sadly I am married to a flipping lizard!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/03/2022 19:18

I can't deal with either very well but definitely find cold far easier to mitigate with clothing, activity and heating than hot can ever be managed. Anything from snow on the ground to about 22C is manageable (preferably with a cool, fresh breeze and a bit of sunshine/sunblock) but heat? Nah. You can't take an aircon unit to the bus stop and it's only heat that I faint in regularly, whilst nobody else is affected by my wearing mountaineering socks and running leggings under my trousers.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/03/2022 19:24

Having lived in countries where it used to get absolutely stinking hot - I’m talking 45-50 C - and the power was often off (so no air con) I think I can say that cold is definitely preferable - at least you can wrap up warm.

Unfortunately you can’t wrap up cold, though I did hear of people with flat roofs wrapping themselves in wet sheets and lying up there to sleep!

FruitToast · 06/03/2022 19:26

Because if you are a cold person that struggles to warm up it's far more miserable than being too hot. I was far more comfortable in Death Valley (at a mere 44C) than I am when I get a chill. I think unless you are a cold person you can't understand being properly chilled to the bone and the painful aches, brain fog and misery it causes. Just for reference my thermostat is set to 20 and I wear fleecy PJ bottoms or thermal leggings, 2 pairs of thermal socks, a vest, a hoody and a fluffy dressing gown when I'm at home. If I sit still I add a blanket!

How did you get frost bite?

RollaCola84 · 06/03/2022 19:29

@TravellingFrom look up hyperthermia and hypothermia, high temperatures are more dangerous to humans than low ones.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/03/2022 19:33

I think it depends!

In a home, where you can go and get another jumper, get under a blanket etc, it’s probably better that the room temperature is on the cool side as there’s more you can do to adjust to it.

If you’re in an office or conference room or something, you’ve only got the clothes etc you came in with, and smart clothes tend to be quite cold (especially women’s). So better to have the room on the warmer side if people are feeling cold.

DedalusBloom · 06/03/2022 19:34

@BuddhaForMary

Hate being cold. I have Reynauds so when it's cold I can't feel my hands or feet. And no amount of layering warms them up.
do try Ginger supplements -I used to have dreadful Reynauds and a complete winter of taking them religiously did the trick for me, anyway.
GracieLouFreeebush · 06/03/2022 19:34

I'd much rather be cold than warm

Cold or cool though. I can tolerate a cool room, a cold room and I’m coughing my guts up, feeling stiff and achey and generally miserable.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/03/2022 19:35

I think overall being cold edges it as worse because the sense of your body just shutting down, and any sense of well being just leaving you, is so awful

Hot is uncomfortable but not to the same extent

MinglingFlamingo · 06/03/2022 19:35

I much prefer being too cold to being too hot. Even worse is slightly too hot to slightly too cold

Too cold you can do things like move around and but jumpers in and have a cuppa. Too hot and you're just can't cool
Down and I get itchy and sweaty. So everyone else knows I'm hot. And flustered and grumpy too

HailAdrian · 06/03/2022 19:39

I fucking hate being cold.
