Chocolate cake help

I would like to bake a chocolate cake for my DDs birthday. I usually get the best results from one of those American style recipients with buttermilk and veg oil in them. Only problem is that I want to make a big deep cake and cut into layers rather than using 2 pans and cannot find a recipe that gives me oven timings for this.

Can anyone help?!

I just use any recipe and put it into one deep cake tin. Usually works for me

I can't quote you specific times because that depends on the quantity of batter/the individual oven, but I'd start off by baking for the time you'd normally give it if you were using two pans, then I'd check it at, say, 5 minute intervals.

You can usually tell when a chcolate cake is almost ready because you can smell it, if that makes sense.
You can then try one of the following to check if it's fully baked:

  1. the edges of the cake have started to come away from the tin 2)a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean if it's cooked, or
  2. if you press it gently with a finger and it springs back up it's baked.

Yeah just use a deep cake tin and time it yourself. Usually it’s double the time that the recipe gives (if the recipe is going by using 2 different tins).

Also just to add best ever chocolate cake I’ve had is a remake of the Nando’s one. I had the fudge cake for dessert at Nando’s once and it was just divine so I found a recipe and omg, amazing.

The Hummingbird Bakery have a recipe called 'Brooklyn Blackout Cake' which you can Google and is delicious.

You can certainly bake in one large tin and just keep an eye on it perhaps adding one third of the cooking time?

Your more likely to overcook a chocolate cake in a deep tin because the top will cook faster than the inside.

Best to bake in sandwich tins then level them off and layer.

Can't seem to get the link but Sally's Baking Addiction Triple Chocolate Cake, the sour cream version, baked in 3 x 20cm tins is my go-to layered birthday cake. Very good and as it doesn't tend to dome, you don't have to trim it radically to layer it. Definitely make 3 layers imo. Those deep tins suit slow-baking fruit cakes etc, not what you want.

Another vote for lidls deluxe choc cake! Also their birthday cakes, slice their top off, decorate with strawberries and cream, super easy super yum.
Not what you asked for though! I imagine you’d tun the oven down a bit once the cake has risen.
