AIBU to think Snapchat and pink news should not be promoting "top surgery" to vulnerable teenage girls?

I am really shocked by this. Pink News and Snapchat are trying to paint "top surgery" for "trans youth" (ie, the removal of young women's breasts) as an aspirational and beautiful thing.

Girls who have dysphoria are often girls who have experienced trauma, are ASD or have internalised homophobia.

The targeting of vulnerable children is sinister and dangerous - where is the safeguarding, accountability, responsibility? Children would not be targeted with any other kind of cosmetic surgery or medical procedures, why is this any different? Why is nobody scrutinising this? Snapchat is probably the most important social networking platform for teens.

Yes it does appear that many believe safeguarding is transphobic. I wonder whose interests the removal of safeguarding serves? It's not kids that's for sure

Personally I.find the notion that trans kids and adults aren't entitled to the same level of safeguarding as everyone else or that they aren't capable of following safeguarding protocols and need to be able to not follow them , the real.transphobia.

Blog post about Sidhbh Gallagher, an Irish surgeon who performs "gender affirmation" surgeries in the US.

Terrifying stuff.

I couldn't finish that piece. Simultaneously apoplectic with rage and genuinely sickened.

@MangyInseam

I think that in reality a lot of the kids calling themselves non-binary are not looking to be neutral so much as revert to the pre-pubescent body they were comfortable in.
this is so true!

@LizzieSiddal

Disgraceful grooming and the phrase “top surgery” should be banned. Its a mastectomy.
Totally agree. It’s horrifying.

The link here deserves a post all of its own so as many people as possible view it.

Just seen that @YouSetTheTone linked to the same blog post yesterday.

There seems to be no safeguarding around kids who may be questioning their identity, especially when pubity hits. Freddy McConnell, who clearly has identity issues himself, and uses his public platform to aggressively target biological women, has a children's book and cbbc program coming out soon. It's not just Snapchat unquestionably promoting these ideas, it's the BBC and Penguin publishing as well!

Yes, sorry I don’t think I made it very clear there was an article linked at the top of my post!

It’s a difficult read, isn’t it. Sad

Frightening that there’s even that small proportion of people who think this is ok. On a parenting site.
YouSetTheTone · 08/03/2022 12:00

Another thing to consider is how offensive and upsetting the agenda that Pink News are pushing is for women who’ve had a double-mastectomy due to cancer, surely?

Are they to be considered less of a woman because of their surgery? Obviously that’s utterly insane - of course they’re not. But pushing ‘top surgery’ onto teenagers and telling them it DOES make them less of a woman… well how do you square that circle?

Leafstamp · 08/03/2022 20:18

Yes, @YouSetTheTone its very offensive and upsetting.

I have seen TikTok videos of girls/young women who are miffed/cross/jealous that their mothers are going to get their breasts removed before them (because their mothers have breast cancer).

It's disgusting.

Gosh.

Can you imagine how heartbroken those mothers must feel about what their daughters want to do to themselves?

Dear God. It's a total indoctrination.

So at least 9 people who voted think I am being unreasonable. They think it's perfectly reasonable to promote extreme and irreversible cosmetic surgery to teenage girls. I am not sure I know what to say to that.

Now Ben Cohen has been tweeting about Pink News winning an award for the Queer Catchup on Snapchat . According to the video 50 million kids have watched it.
